My dog lost a lot of weight after recent vaccinations. Is this normal?

Hello and thank you for your question. I hate to hear that Covid-Max (love that name!) is not feeling well. It's possible that Max is having a vaccine reaction. These generally occur within 24 hours and can range from severe lethargy, fever, swelling of the face to collapse. He may have a fever today which is not uncommon with a vaccine reaction (though not always present). I recommend to call your veterinarian right. They may want to exam Max again to check for signs of a reaction and to treat him. Additionally, if this is a vaccine reaction, they will take precautions in the future to decrease the potential for another reaction. This may include giving him an anti-histamine before his vaccines, spreading out his vaccines or giving him a steroid. I hope this helps and that Max starts feeling better quickly! If it is not the vet who vaccinated him make sure to let them know he had a reaction so they can note in his chart and report it to the vaccine company. I hope Theo feels better soon.

Hello there! I'm sorry Max isn't himself tonight. It is normal that a dog can be lethargic after receiving their vaccines, and you could even see a decrease in appetite. I would be concerned if he was experiencing persistent vomiting and diarrhea, itchy skin or hives, swelling around the muzzle, face, or eyes, severe coughing, difficulty breathing, or collapse. Should you see any off those signs, I would rush him into a vet immediately. The side effects of the vaccines should pass within 24-48 hours, but if he still isn't himself after that time, it would be a good idea to have him seen by a vet. Given that he has a heart murmur, that could also be a cause of him not acting normally, and that should be evaluated by a vet. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Puppy's getting sleepy after their shots is a normal reaction to vaccinations. They can also have a low grade fever and/or one bout of vomiting/diarrhea normally that are no cause for concern. The concern arises when your pet is severely lethargic, not eating, non-responsive, pale gums, or excessive vomiting/diarrhea. If you notice any of these symptoms then it is best to take puppy to a vet asap for immediate care, because a mores serious vaccine reaction is occurring at that point.

I'm sorry Milli isn't feeling well! It's relatively common for dogs to feel lethargic or sore after vaccines. It usually resolves on its own within 24 hours. If she has any vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling or hives I would take her to the vet right away. Otherwise, make sure she has access to water but I'd call your vet tomorrow if she's not back to normal by then.

Hello, sorry to hear about Kai. Yes, similar to humans, pets may be a bit under the weather after being vaccinated. This is typically self limiting and they should be back to their normal selfs in the morning. More concerning signs for a vaccine reaction may include a swollen face, hives, vomiting and decreased appetite. If you note any of these then have him evaluated by his veterinarian.
