How long should my dog wear a cone to protect her surgical incision?

The most important aspect of therapy for an anal sac abscess is systemic antibiotics prescribed by a veterinarian, combined with thorough flushing of it. It is very important to keep Nini from licking at it as that will delay healing. If treated appropriately as described above, it usually takes 1-2 weeks to significantly improve and in most cases resolve. The e-collar should stay on until it appears to be completely healed. Even under supervision, animals that are recovering come surgery can bother their incision site, so it is preferred and advised that the e collar stays on her for the specified time indicated by your veterinarian or unless told otherwise by your vet. Hi there! I would recommend asking the vet who did his surgery how long you should leave the cone on. For my neuter patients, if absorbable sutures have been used for skin closure, I normally tell clients they can remove the cone after 10-14 days since the incision should be healed by then. Thank you for the picture. The incision looks like it has healed really well. Yes it is normal to see some scabbing and from the picture, I don't see any obvious signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus). It takes 10-14 days to fully heal an incision so to be safe, I would keep it on for 14 days, then you can remove it. Frequently, vets who do the surgery like a recheck to be safe, so I'd give his vet a call just to check if you need to bring him in or not. I hope this helps!

Lilly's incision looks like it has healed well. From the picture, it appears she had internal sutures to close the incision. To be safe, I'd wait until 14 days have passed since she was spayed, and then take off the Ecollar. I hope this helps!

Her incision should be healed by now so you should not need another cone. I would take that one off while you are home and make sure she's not licking the area. Distract her if she does, and if there are stitches and she's still going after them then you may need to get another cone and leave it on longer.
