Why is my senior dog weak and not eating after seizure meds?

Your dog is in pain, likely due to a brain tumor that is also causing the aggression and the seizures. The prognosis is not good. Please take him to your veterinarian for an exam. He may need strong sedatives, possibly steroids, and strong pain medicine. I realize you are in India, and that euthanasia is not necessarily legal or customary, however it may be time to let him go peacefully. If that is not possible, your veterinarian can at least ease his passing. Be careful that you are not bitten, as your dog does not have control over this. I am very sorry your dog is so ill.

It is not uncommon to have 24 Hours of lethargy and “post-ictal” behavior especially after a cluster of seizures such as JJ experienced. However, it is also possible that he has something more concerning going on in his brain causing the seizures and lethargy such as encephalitis or cancer. If the behavior or seizure events continue then I would encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian to discuss further diagnostics and possible anti seizure medication. Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. I recommend contacting his veterinarian. He will likely need to start another medication to control his seizures. Phenobarbital, potassium bromide and zonisamide are common choices. However, your veterinarian will know his medical history and which would be the best choice. I'm going to assume that your question is what should you do about this, and I'm going to assume that this is a dog. Without knowing the cause of the seizures - i.e. Epilepsy, brain tumor, menigitis, etc - it's really difficult to know what could be going on. Most epileptics will continue to have seizures occasionally, even on anti-seizure meds. But what you're describing - lack of appetite, no water consumption, and not acting normally - are all signs of a possibly serious problem. So please take your dog to see a vet as soon as possible.

Sorry to hear about Munnu. The lab report you have attached does not provide any insight into the cause of his seizure activity. Unfortunately, a 12 year old dog with no previous history of seizures is most likely the result of a brain tumor or tumor elsewhere in the nervous system (this is of course in the absence of a known traumatic event to the head or neck). Other less likely causes would include certain infectious or inflammatory conditions, or extremely late onset epilepsy. I would recommend getting Munnu onto anticonvulsive drugs right away, and having his stabilized at your veterinarian if the seizures continue with regularity.

Tyler may have had a seizure. I do recommend bringing him into your vet’s for screening bloodwork to rule out severe liver/kidney issues that may cause seizures. If the episode happens again, keep him away from stairs and away from objects that he may hurt himself on during the seizure and stay away from his mouth to avoid being accidentally bitten. Vets generally do not start dogs on seizure medications unless they have had 2 or more seizures in a month or have a seizure lasting more than a few minutes. You can also inquire with your vet about a diet called Purina Neurocare that has helped many dogs with seizures/epilepsy. Good luck!

The trouble eating, disorientation and wobbly gait is likely a transient side effect from the phenobarbital given to control the seizures. This should subside after about two weeks until the body is used to the medication.
