My dog is confused and drooling after a seizure. Is this normal?

It is not uncommon to have 24 Hours of lethargy and “post-ictal” behavior especially after a cluster of seizures such as JJ experienced. However, it is also possible that he has something more concerning going on in his brain causing the seizures and lethargy such as encephalitis or cancer. If the behavior or seizure events continue then I would encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian to discuss further diagnostics and possible anti seizure medication. Hello, seizures are very scary, & in an elderly dog like Harley, it could mean some serious inflammation in the brain. Since he is so weak, I would really encourage you to take him to an emergency clinic for treatment. He may need some anti-inflammatory medication or anti-nausea medication to help with the drooling. Hello, Yes, it can be normal for dogs to experience a change in behavior and attitude for a few days before and after a seizure. These are called the pre and post ictal phases when the brain is preparing and recovering from the seizure. Knowing that she has normal blood work helps to support this. Hello there and thank you for your post! With the symptoms you are describing that Jasper has I would suspect severe dental disease with the drooling and dark brown reddish spots. This could indicate that he has severe dental disease and may explain why he has infrequent eating times. I would also be concerned about a respiratory infection if he is coughing and given his age I would have to put a cancerous cause on my list of possibilities. I would have your veterinarian examine him to find out why he is drooling and coughing. I would suggest getting X-rays of Jasper's chest to see if there are any suspicious changes that would indicate infection or cancer. I hope Jasper feels better! I wonder if these two events are potentially the post ictal phase of seizures. A grand mal seizure is characterized by loss of consciousness and convulsions, but the active phase can be quite short. There is then a recovery period called the post ictal phase where the dog is disoriented, can act aggressive or clingy, can pant heavily, or have trouble walking. I would recommend seeing a veterinarian especially if Tullamore is still walking abnormally. Low blood sugar, anemia or liver disease can cause similar signs but usually they would be persistent.

That depends on if he’s actually having a seizure or if he is trying to get his legs to work normally. The first thing I recommend to do is to record one of these episodes and show it to his veterinarian. While videotaping the episode, call his name as pets who are having seizures are generally not as responsive. If he is having a seizure, the best thing you can do is dim the lights and make the environment quiet. You do not want to create more stimulation. Additionally, if he is having seizures there are medications that can control them and I recommend to discuss this with his veterinarian. If this is not a seizure, I recommend to start him on an omega-3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, a joint supplement, a joint diet and also pursue physical therapy. It's possible that this could have been a type of a seizure, but there are other conditions and behaviors that could mimic a seizure. If this continues, or Bruno is otherwise acting abnormal, then it's best to have him examined by a vet as soon as possible. If Bruno is otherwise acting normal, then there is no need to rush him to the vet, but it would be good to have a vet evaluate him sometime in the near future, because the vet may detect an underlying problem (i.e. heart or neurologic disease) causing this convulsing.
