My old Shih Tzu's eye is cloudy, red, and irritated. Is it serious?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Pepples. The pictures you submitted are very helpful. It appears as though her conjuctiva (the tissue under her eyelids) is very red and swollen. She also appears to have cloudiness to her cornea (the surface or her eye) and tiny vessels growing across it. She will need to see her veterinarian to determine the cause of these changes. She could be suffering from a corneal ulcer (scratch to the surface of the eye). There is also a condition that is common in her breed that causes decreased tear production. Once she has a diagnosis, treatment can be started and she will begin to feel better. Good luck!

This is an emergency, your vet should see you right away, if he refuses you have to take him to another vet that will see him today. cloudiness of the eye is a very serious symptom, there are several eye condition that could cause that but it is important to start the treatment urgently, otherwise permanent eye damage could occur.

This could be an inflammation of the sclera (episcleritis). At this time this does not look very dramatic or like an emergency as I cannot see other swelling which would point to more serious diseases such as glaucoma or an underlying autoimmune disease, however I would make an appointment with a veterinarian for an eye exam soon. It is not possible to diagnose this from a photo, and would need a proper eye exam. The cause of episcleritis (superficial inflammation of the sclera) or scleritis (full thickness inflammation of the sclera) is unknown, however toxins, autoimmune disorders and toxoplasmosis are accepted causes, In severe cases the vet may want to take a biopsy under anesthesia to distinguish between a mass and inflammatory tissue. Treatment may be necessary and would consist of corticosteroids and/or other immunosuppressants.

Possible causes are: a corneal ulcer, infection, allergies, trauma, inflammation or glaucoma. There are specific medications that are safe for the eye and she needs a diagnosis first. Oh no, that looks really bad. Evie could have a severe eye infection, and I can guarantee that is painful to her. I would be afraid this eye will have to be taken out it looks so bad. This is a medical emergency, she has to see a vet now. Please take her into one immediately.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Monty's eye looks very concerning for possible glaucoma, uveitis (eye inflammation), or endothelial disease. I would strongly recommend getting him seen by the vet as soon as possible, as there is a risk of perforation of the eye if this is due to glaucoma. The vet can check the pressures inside the eye, and prescribe medications to help reduce pressure or inflammation. In the meantime, ensure that Monty does not scratch or rub his eye as it is very sensitive and may be prone to being perforated. An e-collar (cone) may help with this purpose. Hi. Poor Charlie. That looks painful. This could be a few things. It could be corneal ulcers, eosinopholic keratitis, glaucoma, dry eye leading to these lesions, and many others. He will need his tear levels checked, a test for scratches on the cornea, and an introcular pressure test. Then the correct diagnosis and medications can be given. Of all of those tests and the rest of the exam is normal, then a referral to an opthomologist could be in order. Good luck
