Why are my dog's eyes watery sometimes? Is it normal or allergies?

There are over the counter eye drops that work well in eye allergy cases or a steroid drop from your vet. If they are still watering, I would ask the vet for a steroid eye drop and try this for a month to see if it helps. I hope this helps! Hi there and thanks for your posting! Watery eyes can be a sign of an environmental allergy like pollen or dust or just caused by excessive hair growth around the eyes leading to eye irritation. You may want to try an prescription antihistimine to see if that helps at all. Diseases of the tear duct, like a tear duct blockage can also cause excessive watery eyes. Yes, allergies can cause excessive tearing. Other causes include obstructed tear ducts and tiny eyelashes rubbing against the cornea (distichiasis). Have Smokey examined by your veterinarian for a diagnosis. The eye should be stained to rule out corneal injury as well. Antihistamines may help allergies, flushing the tear ducts may open them up and having the lashes plucked should decrease tearing.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Kali is very cute. Green or yellow eye discharge isn’t normal. I would recommend you take Kali to a vet for a thorough eye exam. She could have a scratch or an eyelid irritation causing discharge and discomfort. There could also be an allergy causing irritation or an upper respiratory infection. Once a vet sees her they can do tests to rule out a scratch and get her eye medication to help her feel better. Good luck and kisses to Kali!

When a dog gets bitten by an insect or wasp/bee the eyes (or entire face) swells up and becomes itchy. It may be reaction to pollen and plants but insect bites are more common in this part of the year. When the eyes are swollen and itchy you can put cold compresses on the eyes. In most of the cases, administering anti-histamine medication (like Benadryl) is also OK, but please, confirm with your local vets that Kali can have Benadryl, if necessary. Small skin scratches are most likely due to excessive scratching. It is something that should be avoided, if Kali becomes itchy again. The best way to avoid self-inflicted wounds is a head cone.

This could be due to an eye injury or conditions such as a corneal laceration, corneal ulcer, conjunctivitis, dry eye (also known as KCS), among many other conditions. He is so cute! This can be a very normal thing is dogs like him. I wouldn’t be too worried unless he is ever favoring his eyes or if the discharge become thick and green or yellow.
