My dog got water in his ear. Will he get an ear infection or fever?

It is true that getting water in Oliver's ears does increase the risk of an ear infection, and it is very important that you dry his ears thoroughly. If he gave a good shake after the bath and you dried the inside of his ears with the towel, it's likely he got all of the water out.

Poor Scout! If he is really lethargic or walking in circles then I would have him seen today as it could be an inner ear infection. But if he is otherwise acting okay except for shaking his head or pawing at it then yes, it can wait until tomorrow. Your vet will also need to examine the ear with a scope to see if the ear drum is intact, as some medications cannot be used safely if the eardrum is ruptured. Ear infections can be very painful, and can sometimes progress to include the middle or inner ear, where they can cause neurologic signs or permanent hearing loss. You are unlikely to get an eye infection and there are some diseases and parasite that dogs can pass to be people, but this not something you need to worry about. If her ears are not better after a week of medication she will need a recheck though.
