My Yorkie vomits bile, has diarrhea after drinking. What to do?

I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I recommend taking Poppy into an ER clinic. It sounds like she is getting dehydrated and likely needs fluids and other medication to make her feel better. She could have a stomach infection, pancreas issues or even kidney problems. Some cases need lab tests, some xrays, others both, to find out exactly what is wrong. Once the veterinarian diagnoses Poppy they can review a treatment plan to help her feel better.

I'm sorry to hear that you and Ollie have been sick. Yes, we certainly worry about small dogs getting dehydrated from vomiting and diarrhea. If the vomiting has resolved, you could consider mixing water (or low sodium chicken broth) in with his food to make sure he doesn't get dehydrated. You are correct that vomiting and diarrhea are broad symptoms that could be caused by a number of diseases. The most common causes are gastroenteritis (stomach upset from eating something she is not accustomed to), pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas, often caused by high fat foods), a foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract, or others such as toxin ingestion or organ dysfunction. You can try to withhold food for 12-24 hours and re-introduce small amounts of a bland diet such as boiled lowfat chicken breast or hamburger with rice. If she continues to vomit and have diarrhea despite being fasted, she should be evaluated.

When there is blood in the stool I do become a little more concerned. I would recommend a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice, however I would still recommend an examination with a veterinarian tomorrow. That being said if he had a very bloody stool tonight, one that looks like raspberry jam, then he should be seen immediately. If he is developing a problem called HGE they can get very sick very quickly. If he starts vomiting that also increases my concern. I hope he improves quick.

Hello. I am sorry that Daizee isn't feeling well. If she is vomiting and having diarrhoea, and bloodwork and radiographs were normal, this typically means she either has gastritis or pancreatitis. Both of these conditions would result in normal blood and x-rays, but cause the diseases that you are seeing. Often-times these animals need to be in hospital, on IV fluids and stronger pain meds then can be sent home. They often also need multiple medications to protect the gut, and if she is vomiting she can only get these by IV, which means she needs to be in hospital. I would recommend a visit to a 24 hour or emergency clinic if your clinic isn't open, or go back to your vet and discuss if Daizee needs IV fluids and IV medications. Good luck with Daizee!
