Why does my dog vomit after drinking water and seem so thirsty?

She will likely need to have blood and urine testing. She could have diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease or an adrenal gland disorder or even cancer. Thank you very much for your question. Because she is a deep chested dog, we do worry about bloating or other gastrointestinal stomach disease when there is an alteration in drinking or eating. You can fix the airbag problem by doing a few different things. First, you can elevate all of your water bowls so that she may not vomit as often. Second, you can give her a watering system that is constantly moving water that mimics a sink. These are available on many of the commercial retail online sites. Lastly, you can give her 1/4 or half of the amount of water that you normally give her when you are there. By this I mean you won’t give half of the normal water she drinks. But only give half if she is in a shaded, cool, or inside air-conditioned place. If she continues to vomit her water or food often, you can ask your veterinarian to put you on a daily anti-vomiting medication. Thanks a lot for your question. I hope I have helped.

Depends on if there is a tumor on the heart causing compression of the esophagus leading to regurgitation, etc. If the cancer is spreading and beginning to affect other areas of the body such as the GI tract, then vomiting can certainly be a clinical symptom that is seen. Some dogs drink too quickly leading them to vomit up some of the water. I would recommend allowing her to drink small portions of water at a time and fill the bowl with water about 1/4 of the normal amount. Once she is finished drinking that amount, wait about 15 minutes and if she holds that down ok, you can give her more. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Hello. I am sorry to hear about Lolly. There are a few other things that you can investigate that could be causing her clinical signs. Myasthenia Gravis is a condition that could be causing regurgitation, so you can discuss this with your vet. Other motility disorders as well could be present, so biopsies of the stomach and small intestines can be performed to check for these motility disorders. If you work these up and cannot find a reason, you can discuss with your vet about trying medications to help with motility including metoclopramide, or cisapride. There is also the possibility of diseases of the pancrease (EPI vs. pancreatitis) so you can have blood-work done to check for this. Also, discuss with your vet about checking for Addison's disease. Full bloodwork and some other specific tests are suggested. Good luck with Lolly.

I am sorry to hear about Mia. If she is very lethargic/weak, has blood in the vomit, or has a painful abdomen then I think she needs to be seen by her vet right away. If she seems energetic then you can try removing her food and water and fasting her for 6 hours (no food, no water,no treats, no grass or things in the yard if she goes outside) and see if the vomiting stops. If it continues she needs to visit her vet. Poor Rosie! It sounds like she is not feeling well. Just like with humans, there are many potential reasons that a dog may have an upset stomach. It can range from bacterial overgrowth, to intestinal obstruction, or even to pancreatitis. I recommend to have Rosie see her veterinarian and the doctor will begin the process to figure out what is wrong. You can try offering her a bland diet of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This may not help however. It’s always best to be safe. I'm sorry Athena is so sick! Yes, I would be concerned that not being able to keep down water is an indication of something worse, such as cancer which is always possible in a senior dog. It could also be an indication that her kidney disease is getting worseI would definitely take her back into a vet immediately. It's very serious when a dog with kidney disease cannot keep down water, as that will quickly lead to dehydration and damage to her kidneys. She needs IV fluids to prevent dehydration and testing to diagnose what is causing her vomiting. I'm not sure what testing was done, but I'm assuming blood work was done if her liver values were not not elevated. An abdominal x-ray may be called for in this case, but the vet can decide what tests would be best. Regardless, dehydration has to be avoided at all costs, so take Athena back into the vet right away.
