My dog threw up after new food in hot weather. Is it heatstroke?

While extreme heat can cause heat stroke or heat exhaustion that could result in vomiting or diarrhea that doesn't sound like the case for Oskar. Heat stroke also causes weakness and difficulty breathing, and animals do not typically recover without intervention. Something else may have triggered the vomiting and diarrhea - it's possible that Oskar ate something he shouldn't, or that he has one of the other numerous diseases that can cause these signs. If he still is not eating or drinking I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian. Some of the tests they may recommend to determine what is causing Oskar's illness include blood work, abdominal x-rays or a fecal analysis. They might also recommend symptomatic treatment for his lack of appetite.

Yes, I would be worried Blitz hasn't been himself. Heat stroke is a deadly disease in dogs that occurs when they become overheated, and that can lead to the rapid panting and vomiting. The scary part of heat stroke is that there is a lot of internal damage done to the organs from heat stroke, such as death of liver cells, rapid heartbeat, acute kidney failure, irregular heartbeat, and blood clotting disorders among many others. I think given that he was panting rapidly and vomiting yesterday and now is acting out of character that a vet visit would be best. Just to check him over to make sure he is ok. Please take him into an ER vet: if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. If Charlie is ill, he should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Heat exhaustion can be fatal if it is severe enough, & especially if the body temperature approaches or goes over 108 F. I hope he is doing well soon.

Heat can certainly cause vomiting and stress so making sure Aura is kept in a cool, shaded place and provided with plenty of water or even a cool mist may help. I would also discontinue feeding curd as dairy products are extremely hard on pet's bodies and can cause vomiting, diarrhea and GI upset. Feeding Aura a balanced diet formulated for puppies is best to do instead to make sure he gets the right balance of nutrients to stay healthy.

A sudden diet change can cause digestive upset, especially if the switch was sudden. In most cases, a gradual switch is needed to help the body adjust to the new food. It would be best to pick up any food for a few hours, and then offer a bland meal of boiled chicken and rice to help settle Jack's stomach, then return to his old food. Once his tummy has settled down, you can then start transitioning to the new food over a period of 7-9 days (I would recommend only adding in one new food at a time, instead of both a new wet and dry food, to minimize upset). You can add in 25% new food to the mix every 2-3 days as long as he seems to handle eating the mix. If he continues vomiting, worsens, or switching back to the old diet doesn't improve his symptoms, then it is best to seek veterinary care to rule out any other underlying issues or illnesses that may be the cause of his vomiting.

This is very hard to say. This could be a delayed reaction to the flea preventive, but it could also be heat stroke (especially if he has a fever higher than 103.5F) or it could be just a gastrointestinal problem that happened at the same time by chance. Diarrhea and throwing up can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Poseidon for 12 to 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to his regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if he gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on. If you are very worried about his condition , then you may want to take him to the vet before the weekend.

The only way heat could cause this is if Doggy is experiencing heat stroke (high body temperature, collapse, etc). When a dog is having heat stroke it is obvious and life threatening. Just general hot weather shouldn't cause vomiting let alone with blood. Causes of vomiting are: viral (especially parvo) or bacterial infections, intestinal parasites, he ate something inappropriate, pancreatitis, a blockage from eating a foreign object that is stuck, toxin ingestion, clotting or platelet problem or from something local to Lebanon. If he continues to vomit with blood that is an emergency and he should be seen by a Vet. If he is lethargic and won't eat currently he should see a Vet. Otherwise I would start a bland diet of boiled chicken breast with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days to rest his stomach. i wish you the best!
