My dog was overheated. Can that cause an upset stomach or vomiting?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Blood in the vomit indicates most commonly stomach lining irritation or ulceration. The only way heat could cause this is if Doggy is experiencing heat stroke (high body temperature, collapse, etc). When a dog is having heat stroke it is obvious and life threatening. Just general hot weather shouldn't cause vomiting let alone with blood. Causes of vomiting are: viral (especially parvo) or bacterial infections, intestinal parasites, he ate something inappropriate, pancreatitis, a blockage from eating a foreign object that is stuck, toxin ingestion, clotting or platelet problem or from something local to Lebanon. If he continues to vomit with blood that is an emergency and he should be seen by a Vet. If he is lethargic and won't eat currently he should see a Vet. Otherwise I would start a bland diet of boiled chicken breast with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days to rest his stomach. i wish you the best!

While extreme heat can cause heat stroke or heat exhaustion that could result in vomiting or diarrhea that doesn't sound like the case for Oskar. Heat stroke also causes weakness and difficulty breathing, and animals do not typically recover without intervention. Something else may have triggered the vomiting and diarrhea - it's possible that Oskar ate something he shouldn't, or that he has one of the other numerous diseases that can cause these signs. If he still is not eating or drinking I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian. Some of the tests they may recommend to determine what is causing Oskar's illness include blood work, abdominal x-rays or a fecal analysis. They might also recommend symptomatic treatment for his lack of appetite.

Yes, I would be worried Blitz hasn't been himself. Heat stroke is a deadly disease in dogs that occurs when they become overheated, and that can lead to the rapid panting and vomiting. The scary part of heat stroke is that there is a lot of internal damage done to the organs from heat stroke, such as death of liver cells, rapid heartbeat, acute kidney failure, irregular heartbeat, and blood clotting disorders among many others. I think given that he was panting rapidly and vomiting yesterday and now is acting out of character that a vet visit would be best. Just to check him over to make sure he is ok. Please take him into an ER vet: if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website. Causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, viral infections (like parvo), foreign body ingestion (something is stuck and requires surgery to remove), pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, ingested something that is upsetting her stomach, food allergies or intolerance. If Charlie is vomiting while being fasted he should be seen today on Emergency. You can with hold water for 4-6 hours and food until monday am. Offer water after 4-6 hours as ice chips and as small amounts. If there is no further vomiting by the morning then offer a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. Feed as small frequent meals. If Charlie continues to vomit while fasted, after water or food is reintroduced or will not eat he needs to see a Vet. Hello. There is a very wide range of effects that can happen when a pet over heats. Mild effects may just be heavy panting that resolves within 10-15 minutes after getting into a cool environment. Severe overheating, called heat stroke, can cause vomiting, diarrhea, aspiration pneumonia, tissue damage, organ failure, brain damage & death. Watch your dog carefully in the heat, make sure there is plenty of water to drink ( & is non-spillable ) & cool down in ( a kiddie pool ) , plenty of shade, cool dirt to dig in, & never tether or tie a dog out where they can wrap themselves around something. A dog can overheat in as little as 10-15 minutes, so try to never leave a dog outside on very hot days in the afternoon if no one is home to watch.
