My dog just threw up food and white mucus. What should I do?

Poor Daisy. The white mucus can be caused by inflammation of the large intestine. If she has been having diarrhea for more than 24 hours, then it's time to have her seen by a vet. Should it be less than 24 hours, I can give you a home remedy for her. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

Excessive salivary production and licking of the lips sounds like some pretty significant nausea too me. Daisy would likely benefit from some anti-nausea medication. The best drugs for this include Cerenia and metoclopramide, both of which will require a prescription from your vet. Over the counter options which do not tend to work as effectively include things like pepsid and prilosec. I would encourage you to take Daisy in to be examined to see if there is an underlying problem that can be determined. Common causes of nausea in dogs include gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, vertigo / neurologic diseases, inner ear infections, GI foreign bodies, and several different infectious diseases. If you visit the vet, they may want to obtain some images / lab work to rule certain things in and out. Hope this helps!

This could be a sign of an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough or it could indeed be a gastrointestinal problem. Kennel cough often present as gagging and mucoid discharge. Kennel cough is self limiting and usually goes away by itself within a few weeks and often does not need treatment. Should your dog have a fever or the coughing/gagging get worse or should your dog get lethargic, you need to take her to your veterinarian for an exam. Should your dog indeed vomit, you can try the following: I would fast her for 24 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the vomiting, or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, she needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Regurgitation can happen with over-activity but if this is happening regularly it needs to be assessed. Conditions like megaesophagus can cause regurgitation, especially in puppies. Regurgitating is voluntary, and usually involved a bunch of head bobbing before spitting out a bit of solid food. Birds commonly do this to people they like. Vomiting looks more like head shaking, followed by liquid being flung from the mouth. If she is vomiting a white substance, this could be a medical problem that needs to be addressed by a veterinarian quickly. Infections in the crop from bacteria or fungus can cause vomiting and dehydration in birds quickly. There are also certain viruses, nutritional deficiencies, and poisons that can cause vomiting. Aside from keeping Daisy warm and calm, there isn't anything else that you can for her if she continues to vomit aside from bringing her to an avian vet. If she just vomited twice and it does not continue, you can probably keep an eye on her for repeat occurrences, but if she vomits again, please consider bringing her to the vet. As long as Snowball is acting okay and does not continue to vomit, I would not worry too much. It is not unusual for puppies to vomit occasionally especially if it is been a long time since they've eaten. If Snowball becomes lethargic, develops diarrhea or continues to vomit, she should be seen by a veterinarian. Potential causes for vomiting besides that described above include parasites, eating something irritating to the intestinal tract, infections or metabolic issues such as liver and kidney problems.
