My dog threw up mucus after eating but seems fine. What's wrong?

Pets can vomit/regurgitate for many different reasons and this can range from eating something they shouldn’t have, to parasites, to bacterial overgrowth as well as many other more sinister causes. If it only occurs once and Nellie is normal otherwise, it may not be anything to worry about. Vomiting is a very common symptom in animals and can be caused by something going on with the GI tract or any other organ system. If the tubular structure is grass it is possible he vomited that up after eating a large amount of it or if he previously ate something and defecated it out. Sometimes pets can vomit after straining to defecate as well. One of the main concerns with vomiting in animals is foreign body obstruction, which can be an emergency. The character of that vomit is concerning. The best plan would be for him to see your vet for an exam. Bloodwork to rule out extra GI causes and xrays are likely to be recommended as the first steps. This could be a sign of an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough or it could indeed be a gastrointestinal problem. Kennel cough often present as gagging and mucoid discharge. Kennel cough is self limiting and usually goes away by itself within a few weeks and often does not need treatment. Should your dog have a fever or the coughing/gagging get worse or should your dog get lethargic, you need to take her to your veterinarian for an exam. Should your dog indeed vomit, you can try the following: I would fast her for 24 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the vomiting, or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, she needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Causes for coughing up mucous are: kennel cough (inflammation of the trachea) caused by viral, bacterial and mycoplasa, pneumonia or something stuck in the mouth or throat or was chewing or eating something that irriated the back of her throat. Kennel cough in healthy dogs is self limiting but in the young and the old there is an increased risk of developing in to pneumonia. Most vets start antibiotics in puppy's with kennel cough. The cough is dry and "goose honk" like. The dog with cough and then gag (cough hard enough to hit the gag reflec) and sometime will bring up white foam or bile. They are usually eating and happy still. Causes of vomiting in puppies are: intestinal parasites, viral (especially parvo virus) or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), foreign body ingestion (ate something that is stuck causing a blockage), toxin ingestion, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new food/treat or table food. If this was a one time episode and Aira has been fine since then I would watch her. As long as she is eating, drinking, playful and no longer coughing or vomiting sit tight. It's common for puppies and adult dogs to throw-up when they eat something that doesn't agree with their stomach. This can also happen when they exercise just after eating. I wouldn't be concerned unless she vomits three or more times, has any other signs of illness, or you notice blood in the vomit. Otherwise, she should be fine. Give her stomach a rest for four or more hours and only feed a small amount at her next feeding. If she keeps that down, then you can feed her the normal amount of her food. I am very sorry to hear that Maggie is experiencing these problems, There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including pancreatistis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison, or even an gastrointestinal obstruction. It is also possible that Maggie is simply eating too much too fast. If the episodes continue over a 48 hour period, Maggie seems dull or depressed, in pain, ha sprifuse diarrhoea or vomiting, I would take her straight tot wh vet. Your vet will be able to perform a physical exam and run diagnostic tests such as bloodwork to determine the cause of Maggie's vomiting. In the meantime you can continue to monuitir her at home. Rest her stomach for a few hours. Then try smaller meals three times a day. Try a bland diet of boiled chicken breast and white rice for a few days and provide plenty of fresh water.
