My puppy is throwing up food after eating and napping, what's wrong?

No, this isn't normal. It could be a symptom of megaesophagus, which is when the esophagus is enlarged and there is decreased motility of food leading to regurgitation. Penelope could be swallowing back down her food. Megaesophagus can lead to aspiration pneumonia. She could also be eating too fast, causing her to vomit back up her food. I would have Peneople seen by a vet for this on Monday. The vet can diagnose what is causing this behavior and can discuss treatment options with you.

Hi you are correct with Czar that his could be megaesophagus (ME) and less likely choking from something stuck in his throat. Choking would be a very acute and violent episode. ME is something that would continue to happen at most meals. There are some other medical reasons for Czar's clinical signs as well like a hiatal hernia (abnormal position of the stomach) and other defects he could have been born with. Regardless it is extremely important that he been seen by his veterinarian for a diagnosis. They can take an X-ray to look for ME, something stuck in the throat, or a congenital defect. Also, the doctor can get him on medication to help with the vomiting/regurgitation. Best of luck with Czar

Poor Nunu . Sometimes it is hard to know why a puppy with vomit. IT is possible in such a young dog she ate something she should not of or has parasites. I would recommend taking her to a vet to make sure she is parasite free because she is a puppy. Otherwise I would monitor it at home. If she vomits more than she should go to a vet to make sure she does not have a viral or bacterial infection.. Hope that helps

Poor girl. She may have a condition that is causing this such as megaesophagus. I am not sure if your vet has ran any tests yet, but I would recommend starting with thoracic radiographs and perhaps even a barium series will need to be done to detect a possible megaesophagus. Form there the vet will prescribe medication if this conditon is confirmed. The main concern with a pet that regurgitates is aspiration pneumonia. This is why they suggest to elevate the food bowl to allow gravity to help keep the food down. However most owners have to make a gruel (water mixed with food and then puréed) and also give pro-motility drugs (i.e. Metoclopramide) in addition to help manage this condition. I would be concerned about a few different problems including a persistent right aortic arch (PRAA), or a sliding hiatal hernia. These are congenital malformations that can cause vomiting/regurgitation especially after eating. I would try to get a video of the episodes to see if it is true vomiting vs. regurgitation as this will help narrow down possibilities. It is not normal for him to vomit that much. It is not that unusual for a puppy to be sick, especially if he has been running around and eaten recently. As long as the pup seems in goid form I wouldnt worry too much. However if he seems dull or continues to vomit then a trip to the vet would be wise.

This is certainly unusual for such a young dog. I would recommend having him examined by your veterinarian. Some puppies will vomit if they have eaten too much, or ate something they shouldn't. I also see vomiting in cases of parasite infestation, so if has not been regularly wormed then he should be. Not all worms are visible in the feces, rather we can see eggs under the microscope when we complete a fecal exam. I hope this helps!
