My dog vomited red after eating a treat. Is it blood or the treat?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can definitely see that Koda's vomit is reddish in color and has some red flecks in it. It is possible that the vomit has blood in it, though I would not expect it to have flecks in it. It is possible that Koda ate something that was red/pink in color that made his vomit this color. However, even the possibility of blood in vomit is cause for concern as this can be caused by stomach ulcers, foreign bodies, or certain toxins. I recommend keeping a very close eye on Koda, and having her examined immediately if this happens again or your believe you are seeing something that looks like frank blood or dark coffee grounds in her vomit. She should also be seen immediately if you think there is a chance that she may have eaten something she shouldn't have or has gotten into human medications. Until she can be seen by a vet tomorrow, I recommend not giving her any food and only offering small amounts of water. There are emergency clinics in most cities that are open 24 hours. It definitely can be a little bit of blood but I wonder if any of the treats or food he recently ate was red or had red pieces in it. Judging from the picture you provided, it appears as though there is blood in the material that was vomited. This could indicate an ulcer or severe gastritis (inflammation of the stomach). Your veterinarian can provide you with the most appropriate prescription medications to help alleviate the vomiting and help relieve any discomfort in the stomach. Hello. Since she is acting normal & eating, you are fine to just watch her for now. If she continues to act well over the next 24-48 hours, then she should just continue to do well. Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Oh dear. I'm afraid Amber needs to see a vet right away. The tissue you are describing as chunks is likely blood or GI cells that have sloughed off from constant irritation. Amber could have serious pancreatitis, a foreign body, etc. With her age I would also be rather concerned about liver and/or kidney disease. I would get her to the vet asap to avoid further complications. She will likely need iv fluids and injections for nausea/vomiting and antibiotics. Your vet will likely want to do blood work and x rays to sort through the potential problems I have listed. Something like this is potentially life threatening.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry Bobo is sick! Bloody flecks usually indicates that the stomach lining is ulcerated. It can be from all the common reasons for vomiting: ate something gross, food sensitivity, viral or bacterial infection, pancreatitis, toxins, metabolic isssues or drug reaction. Try fasting her for 12-24 hrs then feed as "sip and nibble" of water and bland diet. Try boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. About 3/4 cup per day. If she continues to vomit while fasted or once you start feeding you should take her to the Vet. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Vomiting blood is serious. The GI upset could be due to many conditions including eating something she shouldn't have, bacterial over growth, parasites (worms and giardia), poison, a bleeding disorder, pancreatitis, cancer or intestinal blockage. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian today. Try to remember to take in a stool sample. The doctor will check her for parasites and bacterial over growth and other diagnostics may be recommended as well. She needs the correct diagnosis in order to receive appropriate care.
