My dog is vomiting after flea medicine. Is this a side effect?

However, if this continues, she should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am sorry to hear that Peanut is feeling so cruddy To be honest, that kind of reaction from flea / tick medication starting 24-36 hours after application would not be very typical. Usually signs of illness would start pretty shortly after. The only reason it could be delayed is it Peanut waited awhile and then managed to lick the stuff off his fur. Depending on the type of drug that was used, some have antidotes while others are just treated supportively. There are no antibiotics that are used to help with this kind of issue, unless the vet believes that one might assist with inflammation or prevent a secondary infection. Based on the clinical signs you have described, the best medication that the vet could prescribe would be something to nausea, diarrhea, and acid production. In terms of diagnostics I would run if you came into my office with these symptoms, I would definitely recommend starting with some baseline blood work and potentially some x-rays to rule out a possible foreign body in the intestines. I'm sorry to hear that Boo hasn't been feeling well! It is possible that the permethrin spray or collars may be related to his vomiting, but other possible causes include a foreign body intestinal obstruction, virus, parasites (particularly tapeworms since they can be transmitted by ingesting infected fleas), among others. At this point, I recommend leaving his flea collar off and bathing Boo in original blue Dawn dish soap to remove any residue remaining from the permethrin sponge bath. Withhold food for the next 12 hours, then gradually offer very small frequent meals of a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days. After a few days, gradually mix the bland diet with his normal food over another 5-7 days. If Boo continues to vomit, develops diarrhea, becomes lethargic or stops eating, he will need to go to his vet for further evaluation. Once he vomiting resolves, be sure that Boo is regularly receiving a high quality flea preventative, such as Nexgard, Bravecto, or K9 Advantix II. I hope that he feels better soon!

Hello. It sounds like Charlie was given Capstar & Bravecto. However, if they were administered on the 28th, the Capstar was out of his system after 24 hours. Vomiting & loss of appetite are the 2 most common signs of the Bravecto, but it is still an extremely safe medication. So I am not sure we can blame it on the flea medications after this much time. If the vomiting has just started, withhold all food for at least 8-12 hours, & only allow small amounts of water, preferably as ice cubes. Restart food using 25% cooked chicken & 75% white rice when the vomiting has stopped. Give very small meals frequently rather than 1 or 2 big meals. If Charley seems comfortable, transition back to his regular diet after about 1 day or so. I would observe Archie. Usually, once the offending tablet is out of his body, the vomiting should stop. So he may try to vomit one more time and then that should stop. If he keeps vomiting then you should take him to a vet for an exam. I am not so happy with the Bob Martin Flea products, I would stay away from them and rather buy flea medication from the vet. You then have a guarantee that they are good quality and likely work better than the over the counter medication.

Vomiting and inappetence can be observed with conditions such as gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction, among other possibilities. She may be having side effects to the medications administered. Hair loss and scratching are likely due to allergies. For this reason, I highly recommend that you have Shelby evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as I am afraid she is likely becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and also check her hydration status and give her medications to make her feel better. Good luck!

It could be he is experiencing an abnormal reaction to the flea medication, but it could also be he has a severe illness like kidney disease, GI illness, liver disease, heart disease, or even cancer causing his symptoms. He sounds extremely sick, and I do not think you should wait until tomorrow to take him into a vet. You need to take him into an ER vet immediately. Best of luck.
