Both my dogs are vomiting and have diarrhea. When should I see a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 27 lbs

We have two dogs. One dog, Gracie, has been vomiting, having diarrhea, chills, loss of appetite, increased excitement at some points, and increased sadness at certain points. The other dog, Beau, has only vomited and had diarrhea. This has been going on for about two days. We just want to know if we should send the vet or we should just wait it out.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Gracie and Beau. If they are both are exhibiting similar symptoms, I worry that they have something infectious. They may require fecal testing and medication to clear up their symptoms. I worry that they may become dehydrated as well with losing fluid in the both the vomit and the diarrhea. I would encourage them to drink frequent small amounts of water. It is generally safe to withhold food for 18-24 hours in a effort to rest the gastrointestinal tract. This may help alleviate the symptoms. I hope this information helps!

Since Gracie is listless, she should be examined by a vet for treatment. She could have an infection or parasite and your vet can run lab-work to determine the cause. She may need a dewormer, anti-vomiting, antibiotic, antacid, gastrointestinal protectant, or other medications. She might also need some fluids to prevent dehydration. Hope she feels better soon!

It sounds as Gracie is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

An upper respiratory tract infection is usually indicated by coughing, sneezing, eye and/or nose discharge and bringing up white foamy material. The diarrhea may or may not be related. They will need to see their veterinarian if their symptoms persist. A lot of times an antibiotic will be prescribed. In the meantime, encourage them to continue drinking so that they do not become dehydrated. It is generally safe to hold a dog off of food for 18-24 hours to rest the GI tract. This may resolve the diarrhea. Again be sure to provide water. I hope this information helps!

It is best to seek veterinary care if the others are not recovering. I worry that they will become dehydrated from losing fluid in the stool and vomit even if they are drinking some. My dog has gas, diarrhea, and vomit. Should I fast both dogs?

Hello. It never hurts to do a small fast to help settle the stomach. 12 hours should be fine & then re-introduce food slowly, maybe 1/3 of the ration followed several hours later by another 1/3 & remainder in the evening. If he does not have anymore episodes of vomiting or diarrhea and is feeling better, I would keep an eye on him until the morning and then take him in. If he is lethargic right now, I would get him seen now because he is likely dehydrated and needs fluids administered under the skin for hydration. My dog has vomiting and diarrhea for 2 days. Should I see a vet?

I am very sorry to hear that Emma is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. Unfortunately, with a history of vomiting and diarrhoea, and an inability to keep food down for 2 days, I advise you take Emma in to see her vet. There are a number of potentially very serious causes of such clinical signs, including pancreatistis and ingestion of a toxin or poison. Your vet will be able to perform a physical exam and run diagnostic tests such as bloodwork to determine the cause of Emma's vomiting and diarrhoea. In the meantime you can continue the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. I hope that answer was helpful and more importantly that Emma feels better soon.
