My dog is vomiting, has diarrhea, and strains. Is it a blockage?

If Titan has diarrhea and then appears constipated, this is an emergency as he may have an intestinal blockage and he would need to be seen by a veterinarian right away. However if he is just vomiting and has diarrhea and is still eating and drinking try the following: Diarrhea and throwing up can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Titan for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to his regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if he gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), pancreatitis, toxin ingestion, medications, food allergy/intolerance, new treat/food/table scraps. The straining is due to inflammation and that he feels like he has to defecate but there is little to no stool left. The scooting can be from anal irritation, stool stuck to his anus (check and clean) or his anal glands are full If the diarrhea is bad, then I recommend fasting him for 12-24 hours to rest his GIT and to stop adding "fuel to the fire." Then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If the diarrhea continues, he stops eating or starts vomiting he should see your Vet. I hope this helps and I wish Takoda a speedy recovery!

It is possible to be related if it is a partial blockage in the stomach and it is floating around. But it may be unrelated as he could have a viral/bacterial infection that can cause similar symptoms. If the vomiting persist or bloody diarrhea occurs, then bring him to your vet for blood work and x rays to make sure.

I always tell clients that if signs persist, worsen, or other signs develop after 12-24 or even 36 hours (depending on their severity), I advise a check up at their veterinarian. If the pet is acting sick then the waiting time goes down to zero, they should be seen immediately. So if Roko doesn't act sick or isn't uncomfortable, you could probably wait this out and see what happens. If he is constantly straining to have a bowel movement then of course he should be seen immediately. Vomiting and diarrhea can have many causes such as intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion (eating things dogs are not supposed to eat), overgrooming with resultant hair ingestion, toxin ingestion, foreign body ingestion, other problems with the gastrointestinal tract, problems with organs outside of the gastrointestinal tract, among many others. Your vet can get a detailed history and do a thorough exam. Once those are done, a diagnostic plan and treatment plan can be discussed and implemented. Possible tests include fecal/blood/urine tests and xrays as a starting point, called a minimum data base. If Roko isn't acting sick and straining a lot you could try some canned pumpkin with his food which is high in fiber. 1-2 teaspoons with each meal (canned pumpkin, NOT pumpkin pie filling). This will increase fiber to the gut and hopefully get the gut back on track. Good luck with Roko.

If the vomiting continues than he could have a blockage. If he is otherwise acting ok than you could withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet of boil chicken and white rice. If the vomiting resolves, continue feeding the bland diet for a few days and then gradually switch back to his regular food. If the vomiting and diarrhea continues then he needs to be examined by a veterinarian to determine the cause. Your veterinarian can take an x-ray to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat his problem.

There are lots of things that could cause vomiting and diarrhea in a dog, including dietary intolerance or indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. If it persists for 24 hours or if Oscar seems lethargic, I would recommend having him seen by a vet where you are vacationing.

4 days is very long for a dog to have vomiting and diarrhea. I recommend that Alexa see a vet as soon as possible. Potential causes for her illness include dietary intolerance, dietary indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. Your vet may recommend abdominal x-rays, bloodwork, or an intestinal parasite screen to help diagnose her ailment and create an appropriate treatment plan.
