My dog is vomiting, has diarrhea, ate a toy. Is it an emergency?

Vomiting and inappetence can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. I am concerned that he could be showing signs of an obstruction which is something that requires therapy which sometimes includes surgery. I recommend that you have Jager evaluated by a veterinarian at this point for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. Good luck and have a good night!

If he does not have anymore episodes of vomiting or diarrhea and is feeling better, I would keep an eye on him until the morning and then take him in. If he is lethargic right now, I would get him seen now because he is likely dehydrated and needs fluids administered under the skin for hydration. He may also have eaten something that caused all of this, have an infection or have an intestinal obstruction. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. I hate to hear Liam is giving you a scare! The vomiting can be highly variable based upon where it is in the GI tract. Blockages in the stomach tend to result in vomiting very quickly after eating. The intestines are pretty long (like 26 feet) and so the further down it goes, the more delayed things can be. I advise to be worried about any vomiting, no matter how far after eating it occurs. Make sure to keep you vet up to date as they may want to see him again. Also watch for lethargy and decreased appetite-also let your vet known if this is seen. Hopefully he'll be fine! Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Hercules. Sounds like you need to have him evaluated again by your vet. Just wondering if any blood work was done and if not I would advise getting some done to evaluate his overall health and internal organ function. Possibilities include intestinal parasites (roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, giardia, coccidia, etc), dietary indiscretion (eating things dogs are not supposed to eat), dietary/nutritional problem, infection/inflammation, foreign body ingestion, toxin exposure, other gastrointestinal diseases, disease in organs outside of the gastrointestinal tract (pancreatitis, kidney/liver disease, etc), among many other causes. The fact that he won't eat is significant since he will get weak and possibly dehydrated also if he is not drinking fluids. Your vet can reevaluate him and see if anything has changed on physical exam and then propose other tests if needed. Good luck with Hercules. I hope he feels better soon.

If Titan has diarrhea and then appears constipated, this is an emergency as he may have an intestinal blockage and he would need to be seen by a veterinarian right away. However if he is just vomiting and has diarrhea and is still eating and drinking try the following: Diarrhea and throwing up can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Titan for 24 hours and then put him on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to his regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if he gets lethargic, he needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

The injection is called Cerenia, if this didn't help then you must take him back to the vet for a blood test and xray/ulrasound, he might be suffering from either a foreign body in the GI tract or severe gastrointestinal infection.

This sex toy may be causing an obstruction, which is fatal without treatment. Gator has to see a vet now. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.
