Why does my dog keep throwing up daily but seems otherwise healthy?

Suddenly switching foods can cause digestive upset which can lead to vomiting. Not eating often enough can also lead to vomiting for the opposite reason -- not enough food in the stomach can cause a buildup of bile and acid which leads to digestive upset and vomiting. If you switched Finn's food too quickly, returning to his old food and gradually switching over a period of 7-9 days can help ease the transition. If he's not eating enough, offering several smaller meals throughout the day can help keep him eating (without it being too large of an amount at once) without his stomach emptying completely. If he continues to vomit even with the above adjustments, or other signs and symptoms appear, a full workup at your vet is best.

Blood work is always a good idea. He may have gastric reflux in which case it is best to feed him multiple small meals throughout the day to keep his stomach from being empty too long. You can also try a trial of Pepcid (famotidine), 5mg once a day in the evening before bed (so 1/2 of a 10mg tablet). Do this for 7-14 days and then see what happens. If no improvement I think you and your vet should do more testing to figure out what may be going on. If this does help, I suggest you consult with your vet about what you did and see what their recommendations are from there. It is not usually a good idea to keep them on famotidine daily forever as it will shut down the stomach's ability to produce any gastric acid which is not a good idea. As a side note, ground beef and steak are really high in fat (even the lean varieties) so I would stop feeding that. High fat diets can cause pancreatitis and vomiting. Boiled chicken or turkey would be better. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Poor guy. I would be cautious here and take him in to your local vet right away if this has been going on for more than 30 mins-1 hr or if he is lethargic. A number of things could be going on here such as a toxin ingestion, severe stomach upset episodes or an underlying disease such as Addison's disease. Check his gum color immediately and if you notice pale gums then he should be seen right away as well. I do hope that this is just a stomach upset and that he starts to improve over the next hour. If he does seem to calm down, then you should definitely fast him for the next 12 hrs (water only), then you should feed him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice for the next few days to help settle his stomach. It sounds possible that Magi may have acid reflux disease. I would inquire with your vet about trying a short course of antacids on her. If that has already been tried, then I would suggest doing some bloodwork to check for any organ issues. And if that again is normal, then a food trial should be done to treat for suspected inflammatory bowel disease. Some good food options here are going to be easily digestible foods such as Royal Canin hypoallergenic HP, Hill's Selected protein PR, or Hill's Z/D Ultra. There could be several reasons for vomiting just in the morning, common causes would include dietary intolerance (unlikely if Falkor has been on Nutro for a while), dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't), food allergy, intestinal parasites, bilious vomiting syndrome, among a few less common things. He definitely needs a thorough examination with a vet, and if he starts having diarrhea or becomes lethargic, you should see if the vet can fit you in sooner than Friday. In the meantime, you can see if changing up his food routines slightly to help with possible bilious vomiting syndrome. Feed Falkor a small meal right before bedtime, and give him breakfast first thing when he wakes up. We are trying to limit the amount of time he has an empty stomach at night. After examination and routine testing (like intestinal parasite screening, bloodwork, or xx-rays) to rule out other causes of vomiting, your vet may prescribe an antacid, medications to coat an upset stomach, or medications to help move things out of the stomach quicker in an attempt to manage the vomiting. A complete workup from your vet is best to rule out anything more serious such as food allergies, GI problems, etc that could be underlying and are being masked by the medication if the problems are persisting. In some cases, reflux and vomiting bile can happen if your dog has an empty stomach for too long. Feeding smaller meals more frequently, or feeding a treat right before bed/waking up first thing can help keep enough in the stomach to keep your dog from vomiting. However, I would still let your vet know the vomiting is continuing when off the meds and schedule a vet visit to rule out any issues anyway.
