My dog throws up bile after new food. Is it the food or boredom?

Poor Finn! I would try to feed him a bland diet of plain boiled boneless, skinless chicken and white rice to see if this settles his tummy. If the vomiting is happening first thing in the morning before breakfast, it would be acid reflux. To remedy this you can try feeding him right before bedtime and right when you wake up. Acid reflux is from the acid building up in their stomach overnight when they go a long period without food. If these tricks don't help or he is showing any new symptoms, I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to determine the cause and get him started on the proper meds to help him feel better. I hope this helps!

A sudden diet change can cause digestive upset, especially if the switch was sudden. In most cases, a gradual switch is needed to help the body adjust to the new food. It would be best to pick up any food for a few hours, and then offer a bland meal of boiled chicken and rice to help settle Jack's stomach, then return to his old food. Once his tummy has settled down, you can then start transitioning to the new food over a period of 7-9 days (I would recommend only adding in one new food at a time, instead of both a new wet and dry food, to minimize upset). You can add in 25% new food to the mix every 2-3 days as long as he seems to handle eating the mix. If he continues vomiting, worsens, or switching back to the old diet doesn't improve his symptoms, then it is best to seek veterinary care to rule out any other underlying issues or illnesses that may be the cause of his vomiting.

I'm not sure this vomiting is related to the new food. One would expect that the colon and the stomach should be one the same page since they are all part of the same tract. So if a food upsets the stomach, it is likely it will upset the colon. The fact that the KO fixed the colon (ie the poop issues) but now Jack is vomiting is not expected and is unusual. I don't recommend to switch the food unless your vet advises it. Instead, call your vet. They may recommend steroids or another medical treatment for the IBD. They may also recommend an abdominal ultrasound to rule out a cancer like GI lymphoma. If you do want to try a food, I recommend a hydrolyzed diet since it will diagnose all types of adverse food reactions. The formula I recommend is Royal Canin Ultamino. If your pet has vomited this much in the past 45 minutes I would be very suspicious of a foreign body or a very intense dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have). I would recommend you start supportive care (like Famotiidne 05-1.0mg/kg every 12 hrs and a bland diet like Purina EN Gastrointestinal canned food OR boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. However there is a big possibility that this could have been a toxicity and if any more symptoms start to arise (such as ataxia (staggering) or shaking, crying out) then I highly recommend you seek a personal veterinarian for a physical examination and further diagnostics. - Dr. H

Vomiting can be observed with gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, food sensitivity, foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. Honestly we rarely have to put these dogs on a special diet but if I had to pick a diet I would say high fiber which may help with GI motility. A prescription diet from your vet like Hill's w/d would be best. I would use the canned version. I am a bit worried that the diagnosis is not correct. There are many other reasons why a dog could be vomiting bile (parasites, partial GI obstruction, GI motility disorder, cancer, endocrine disorder, food intolerance/allergy, etc). Did he have any blood testing done? X-rays? I think you have already done what should be tried for simple bilious vomiting syndrome. Since he hans't improved and is actually worse, I strongly recommend you consult with your vet about more testing. I am also concerned as this is a diagnosis usually seen in older dogs; Earl is young to have this issue. In the meantime you can try giving him some over the counter antacid (famotidine) 10mg once a day but only give this until you can get him back to your vet. It could be due to the new food. I can give you a home remedy for Chance to se if that helps. Withhold food tonight, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.
