Why is my dog spitting up bile and not eating after medicine?

Honestly we rarely have to put these dogs on a special diet but if I had to pick a diet I would say high fiber which may help with GI motility. A prescription diet from your vet like Hill's w/d would be best. I would use the canned version. I am a bit worried that the diagnosis is not correct. There are many other reasons why a dog could be vomiting bile (parasites, partial GI obstruction, GI motility disorder, cancer, endocrine disorder, food intolerance/allergy, etc). Did he have any blood testing done? X-rays? I think you have already done what should be tried for simple bilious vomiting syndrome. Since he hans't improved and is actually worse, I strongly recommend you consult with your vet about more testing. I am also concerned as this is a diagnosis usually seen in older dogs; Earl is young to have this issue. In the meantime you can try giving him some over the counter antacid (famotidine) 10mg once a day but only give this until you can get him back to your vet. Vomiting can be observed with gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, food sensitivity, foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. The bilirubin is a bit high, as is the ALP (alkaline phosphatase) but neither of these values is super specific in terms of what the cause or the best treatment is. We can see the ALP be elevated with stress, age, and sometimes even normal cell regeneration within the liver. The bilirubin can be slightly elevated when the blood sample is what we call "hemolyzed," which can sometimes happen when blood is spun down for a blood test to be run. Therefore, if he is still showing symptoms of illness, I would echo what Dr Ana said; it may be time to consider imaging. Either X-rays or an abdominal ultrasound maybe helpful in identifying the problem and therefore identifying the best way to treat it. Take him back to the vet if he's still having troubles, as he probably is in need of some more fluids as well. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. If it is more than a couple of hours after taking her medication before she vomited, Bailey probably got most of her dose. However if she continues to vomit, or isn't eating at all after 48 hours she may need some fluid therapy. I would recommend contacting her vet tomorrow if she still isn't eating. If she vomits anymore tonight or seems to feel worse then she may need to go to an emergency clinic tonight.

It sounds like Buster's tummy is upset. This could be due to many reasons including bacterial overgrowth, a medication reaction, stomach acid, dietary intolerance or perhaps an oncoming disease like kidney disease. I recommend to play it safe and have Buster examined. The doctor may recommend to check his blood levels to make sure everything is ok internally. Antibiotics and urinary tract infections themselves can both cause nausea/vomiting. However, as you finished the antibiotics 5 days ago, it is less likely that the vomiting is due to the UTI antibiotics. If she has recently gotten table food or had access to food from the garbage, she may have a condition called pancreatitis caused by a sudden high fat meal that may cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain. A trip to your veterinarian for screening bloodwork to rule out a liver/kidney/pancreas issue as the cause of the vomiting, subcutaneous fluid therapy, anti-nausea medication (cerenia), and a prescription intestinal diet is advised. If you are not able to get an appointment immediately, I recommend feeding only a bland diet of boiled rice and chicken (with no regular kibble) for the next 3-5 days. Sometimes this alone helps resolve the symptoms of mild gastroenteritis. Good luck!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lily. I would recommend that she sees her veterinarian for some testing. She will likely need blood work and a urinalysis to start. She may require x-rays of her abdomen and fecal testing as well. She is likely not eating as her belly hurts from gastrointestinal upset. Some dogs who go long periods in between meals will vomit as a result of the acid building up in the stomach. This may be the cause of her vomiting, but still does not explain her decreased appetite. Offer her small frequent meals in the meantime to encourage her to eat. I hope this information helps!
