Why is my dog burping, sick, and not eating with an upset tummy?

I'm sorry to hear that Buster isn't feeling well! Vomiting and diarrhea can occur as a result of a virus, parasites, stomach upset from eating different foods or treats, among other health conditions. If he is acting normally and still able to keep water down, you can try monitoring him at home first by withholding food for 12-24 hours. After that time, offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days, then gradually transition back to his normal diet over another 5-7 days. However, if Buster's vomiting or diarrhea worsen, or if he becomes lethargic and stops drinking, a trip to the vet will be in order to assure that he has not become dehydrated and to get to the bottom of the problem. It could be related, Buster could be nauseous. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, vomits the bland diet, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, develops diarrhea, or becomes very lethargic, have him seen by a vet.

Since both Buster and your pug experienced vomiting after the diet change, it stands to reason that the new diet may be associated with this issue. However, Buster’s ingestion of Mobic (meloxicam) could also be associated with his GI upset. Overdoses of meloxicam can also cause kidney damage, which can also result in lethargy and vomiting. Since Buster is still lethargic, it would be best to take him to his vet for an exam and blood work to check his kidney values. If his vomiting continues, he will also likely need abdominal xrays to determine if an intestinal obstruction is present due to the toy that he ate. After any possible medical issues have been addressed, it may be best to avoid using this particular diet. Just remember that anytime you change a dog’s diet to do so gradually by mixing the foods together over 5-7 days. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Buckis! Just be sure he is burping and not non-productively retching (trying to vomit but not bringing anything up). Non productively retching with a swollen belly and/or pacing is an emergency. If it is just occasional burping and he is resting comfortably then just continue to monitor him and follow your Vets recommendations. I hope this helps and I wish Buckis a speedy recovery!

Poor Buddy! It is difficult to know the cause without examining him and knowing the medications he is taking. If he is taking an antibiotic then he could have an upset stomach from the antibiotic. You should call your vet and give him/her an update as your vet may need to change medications. You could also add a probioitc to his diet and see if that helps. It would also be a good idea to have a stool sample tested for parasites to make sure he doesn't have an intestinal parasite causing the problem. Hope he feels better soon!

The signs you are describing can be caused by dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, bloat, or a number of parasitic infections results in nausea. Some of these conditions are potentially life threatening, so I recommend having Bullet seen by a vet as soon as possible. They can perform bloodwork and x-rays, as well as give Bullet any supportive care he may need. I hope all is well!

Garling noises are called borborygmi and this can be normal stomach noises, but when heard along with lack of appetite this suggests gastritis (inflamed stomach). Gastritis can be cause by many things including dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have), FB ingestion, and many organ malfunctions. The rubbing of the side of his butt on things is also a sign that his anal glands (two sacs located on the inside of his rectum at the 4 o'clock and 10 o'clock position) are possibly full and irritating him. Anal glands are suspected to be caused by allergies and also often get full when pets go through bouts of diarrhea, because normally they are expressed when hard feces push past them. Because of the multiple factors that are affecting your pet, and the possible need for him to get his anal glands manually expressed to reduce discomfort, I am recommending taking him into your vet for a good exam. If he is found to have some GI upset then an appropriate antibiotics can be prescribed to help him. I would also recommend a probiotic, such as Culturelle over the counter or one from your vet, and a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help settle the stomach over the next 4-7 days, then slowly transition him back to his normal diet if all goes well.
