Why is my dog not eating, losing weight, and throwing up bile?

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | spayed | 10 months and 2 days old

I have a one year old border collie. She is not putting on any weight and refuses to eat all her food and will eat barely half a cup of food a day. And I try to feed her a cup of food twice a day. Also she has started vomiting in the middle of the night or early hours of the morning, which is just bile and never any food. What do you think I should do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lily. I would recommend that she sees her veterinarian for some testing. She will likely need blood work and a urinalysis to start. She may require x-rays of her abdomen and fecal testing as well. She is likely not eating as her belly hurts from gastrointestinal upset. Some dogs who go long periods in between meals will vomit as a result of the acid building up in the stomach. This may be the cause of her vomiting, but still does not explain her decreased appetite. Offer her small frequent meals in the meantime to encourage her to eat. I hope this information helps!

I am sorry to hear about Lil Bit- he is quite a cutie! I would recommend taking him to the vet for an exam since it has been 24 hours and he isn't back to his normal self yet. If he is seeming uncomfortable/painful and is not wanting to eat we worry about things like pancreatitis which can cause these symptoms and often require supportive care such as anti-nausea medication, pain medication, and fluid therapy to help hydration. We also worry about things like ingestion of foreign objects and inflammation or ulcers of the stomach. The vet will examine him and check for fever and dehydration. Based on his exam they may recommend testing such as an x-ray or bloodwork, which will help to guide his treatment. Best of luck to you and Lil Bit!

My dog is throwing up undigested food and clear liquid. What to do?

It sounds as Lilly is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

My dog is sick: not eating, diarrhea, and throwing up. What to do?

Poor girl. Dolly sounds like she has a severe illness going on. She could potentially even have pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas that is more common in smaller breed dogs. I would highly recommend getting her seen by your vet asap for a pancreatitis test and bloodwork to get an overall health assessment so that we know what medication she needs specifically to get her feeling better. When pets are ill, it is almost impossible to force them to eat, especially if they are nauseous, so it's imperative to get her seen right away. If you are not able to get her in today, then you can offer her some boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese, but it is best to get her seen quickly so that her condition doesn't get any worse. Loss of appetite and vomiting can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Layka evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. You can offer a bland diet which may help. This diet could be composed of rice, boiled chicken, ham, turkey, lean hamburgers or low fat cottage cheese. My dog is throwing up bile and not eating. Should I go to ER vet?

Throwing up can have many causes. It is basically a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc. I would fast Sadie for 24 hours and then put her on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to her regular food slowly over a few days. If Sadie soes not eat, or if the vomiting persists, or if she gets lethargic, she needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

Why is my senior dog throwing up yellow bile on an empty stomach?

Dogs generally vomit bile when they have an empty stomach. I recommend feeding small meals several times daily to reduce the vomiting. Or you can give a treat or two just before bed and first thing in the morning. Generally this is nothing to be overly concerned about. If she continues to vomit, doesn't feel well or starts losing weight then please take her in for and exam and bloodwork.
