Why is my dog throwing up bile and food after eating? What to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 40 lbs

Hi there, my 40 pound Staffie mix had been throwing up bile in the morning once every 7-10 days, then we adjusted his eating schedule and he throwing up was less frequent for a few weeks. Now he’s back to every week even with the more frequent meal times (same amount of total food) and tonight he threw up his food about 30 minutes after eating. He eats two cups total of Hill’s Science Diet Sensitive Skin/Stomach. What could be causing this and what should we do?

Poor Louis! There are many causes for continued vomiting. Certainly parasites like worms and giardia can cause frequent vomiting. Bacterial over growth is also common in younger dogs. Food allergies or intolerance are possible at his age. Lastly a more serious cause can include a partial intestinal obstruction.
I recommend to have Louis visit his veterinarian for a physical exam and to rule out some of the more common causes. Treatment will depend on the cause and may include medications or a special diet. Once you know the cause, Louis can get appropriate treatment and feel better.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Louis. I'm sorry you are having such problems with him vomiting. There could be a couple of reasons why he is throwing up. He could be eating too quickly, causing him to ingest a lot of air, leading to the vomiting. It could be due to anxiety or fear, such as if he shares the home with other animals and feels the need to eat quickly so his food isn't stolen. It could be he loves the taste of his food, causing him to eat quickly and thus the vomiting. There could also be a medical reason behind it, such as pancreatic disease, diabetes, Addison's disease, GI ulcers, kidney disease, or liver disease to name some. I would take him into the vet first thing in the morning for a physical exam, blood work, and urinalysis. From those results, the vet may decide to pursue further testing, or there may be answer leading to treatment options. I hope this helps.

My dog keeps throwing up. What's the cause and what should I do?

Vomiting could be caused by a number of things, including parasites, diet changes, toxin ingestion, infectious viral diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, food sensitivity/allergy, decreased pancreatic function, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Please have your dog seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible to allow for diagnosis and treatment. If your dog could have eaten anything such as medications, household cleaners, plants, toys, food scraps, or garbage, please let the vet know about it to help them determine if there could be a toxicity. My dog vomited chunky food and is lethargic. Did he eat chicken bones?

It sounds as Louie is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

My puppy keeps getting hiccups then throws up bile. What should I do?

This is certainly unusual for such a young dog. I would recommend having him examined by your veterinarian. Some puppies will vomit if they have eaten too much, or ate something they shouldn't. I also see vomiting in cases of parasite infestation, so if has not been regularly wormed then he should be. Not all worms are visible in the feces, rather we can see eggs under the microscope when we complete a fecal exam. I hope this helps!

Is clear vomit and rumbling stomach in my dog a sign of hunger?

Hi and thanks for posting! Dogs do not typically vomit from hunger but may vomit for other reasons such as dietary indiscretion, gastric reflux, parasitic infection, gastrointestinal obstruction, and pancreatitis just to name a few. I would withhold food from Louie for the next 6-8 hours (he can have water) to give his stomach a break. If he continues to vomit today, I would take Louie into see his veterinarian. Vomiting is sometimes seen with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis and chronic kidney disease, among many other conditions. Given Mugsy's young age and the fact that he is otherwise doing fine and this is sporadic, dietary indiscretion appears more likely. It may be something as easy as just changing his diet to something that he can tolerate better. However, an examination by a veterinarian as well as minimal diagnostic data would be needed to rule out more concerning things. You can start by changing his diet to a sensitive stomach type diet. If no improvement, have him examined by a veterinarian to start therapy if needed based on findings. Good luck!
