Why is my dog still vomiting after Parvo, but diarrhea stopped?

Pet's info: Dog | Saint Bernard | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 29 days old | 60 lbs

My dog has been vomiting in a gap of 2-4 days. He was treated for Parvo but vomiting has not stopped. Diarrhea has stopped. What could the reason be?

If Alexaander has been treated for parvovirus recently it is concerning that he is still vomiting. Sometimes dogs with parvovirus can develop an intussusception, which is a condition where the intestine folds in on itself causing an obstruction. This could cause diarrhea to stop while vomiting continues. Severe dehydration could also cause this. I would recommend a recheck with the vet who initially treated Alexaander: they may recommend some tests like an x-ray or additional treatment to control nausea and correct dehydration.

Parvo can be a very nasty intestinal virus and I have seen it wax and wan during it's course. I don't think it is unusual for the vomiting to stop temporarily then resume. Sometimes I feel they have to hit rock bottom before they start to get better. The drooling indicated nausea so that makes sense the vomiting followed. I am assuming Milo is under a Veterinarians care. I would call them and ask to refill antinausea medications or if you have them already and had stopped them, then I recommend restarting. If he continues to be very lethargic and vomit you should take him some where today for fluids and to have them feel his belly.

I hope that she has some medication on board for nausea and vomiting - if not, your vet should be able to prescribe some for you to give at home. Normally, with parvo, the best sign of recovery is when they have gone 24 hours without any vomiting and are eating on their own - until then, you need to continue treatment with fluids and other supportive care.

Hello. It does sometimes take time for the gut to heal after a bad bout of Parvo, & 11 days of treatment says to me this was a tough one. Continue to fed Pluto, but you might want to switch to an intestinal diet or one made for sensitive stomachs & skin. I would try feeding pretty small amounts frequently, rather than 2-3 larger meals a day. Even a tablespoon or two every hour or so might be tolerated better. If your Pluto was not under the care of a vet for this, I would also be concerned about concurrent intestinal parasites, so a good deworming may be necessary. My dog just came home from parvo, still vomiting. What should I do?

Oh goodness. I’m so sorry Oakley is still sick. It is possible that she still needs some anti nausea medications. Occasionally parvovirus puppies will develop an intussception. This can end up being very serious and may end up needing surgery. Please take her back to your veterinarian tomorrow morning and decide what else she may need. I hope she improves soon.

My parvo survivor puppy is pooping water and vomiting white foam.

I am so sorry to hear that Sweety isn’t feeling well. Certainly bacterial infectionor a parasitic infection could be possible. However I would most concerned about a problem called intussusception which is a serious problem where the intestines telescope on themselves and cause an obstruction. Why is my dog vomiting solid food after recovering from parvo?

Hello. This is very, very unusual. Once a parvo patient recovers, they continue to do well. And, I have never heard of a pup recovering from parvo needing medication for 3 weeks. If Chico had parvo 3 weeks ago, & just started vomiting 4 days ago, it has nothing to do with his previous illness. Something else is going on. Please contact your veterinarian, as he may need to modify whatever medication he prescribed. Why is my dog throwing up, not eating, and sad after negative parvo?

Poor Charlie! It's great that she doesn't have parvo, but if she can't keep food down and keeps throwing up, she could have a severe GI illness, pancreatitis, or a foreign body. I would take her back into the vet now. She will need a shot to stop the vomiting, and IV fluids for hydration. If the vet hasn't done x-rays to check for a foreign body, I think it would be a good idea for those to be done.

My dog won't eat his food and vomits. Is it parvo or something else?

Parvo virus can occur in adult dogs but often is more of a worry in puppies. Rye could have some other infection or a GI foreign body or perforation if he chews or eats bones or other items. Addison's disease, parasites, kidney failure or diabetes mellitus can all cause vomiting. I would recomend getting Rye to vet for physical exam. Depending on exam findings they may recommend tests or may be able to start symptomatic care to help stop the vomitting and get him feeling better. The sooner he is evaluated and treated the easier treatment may be. If he becomes dehydrated or loses too much protein or nutrients from vomiting he may require fluid therapy or more aggressive treatment to recover. I hope Rye feels better soon.
