Why is my dog throwing up after wearing a new flea collar? Is it safe?

I'm sorry to hear that Boo hasn't been feeling well! It is possible that the permethrin spray or collars may be related to his vomiting, but other possible causes include a foreign body intestinal obstruction, virus, parasites (particularly tapeworms since they can be transmitted by ingesting infected fleas), among others. At this point, I recommend leaving his flea collar off and bathing Boo in original blue Dawn dish soap to remove any residue remaining from the permethrin sponge bath. Withhold food for the next 12 hours, then gradually offer very small frequent meals of a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days. After a few days, gradually mix the bland diet with his normal food over another 5-7 days. If Boo continues to vomit, develops diarrhea, becomes lethargic or stops eating, he will need to go to his vet for further evaluation. Once he vomiting resolves, be sure that Boo is regularly receiving a high quality flea preventative, such as Nexgard, Bravecto, or K9 Advantix II. I hope that he feels better soon!

If Chockey vomited 2-3 hours after you gave the Nexgard, it is likely that the tablet was digested and that he has the preventative in his system. If he vomited shortly after you gave the tablet, it is possible that he vomited up the nexgard. If you want to use a collar this should be absolutely fine as it is more of a topical preventative and not a systemic. These flea collars are extremely toxic and one should not use them anymore. Tetrachlorvinphos toxic to the nervous system and likely to cause cancer. The collar could indeed have caused these signs in your kitty. There are quite a few flea and tick medications on the market, such as spot-ons that are not detrimental to the health of your cat. Here are safe flea products: Spot-ons and/or chews Advantage, Advantix Advantage Multi (Advocate in the UK) Frontline (ticks as well) Bravecto spot on (ticks as well) - for cats, Simparica, Nexgard Revolution (stronghold in the UK) Tablets: comfortis (will only kill fleas once) Collar: Seresto (ticks as well)

It is very likely that this is an adverse reaction to the flea collar and you should leave it off, You can get a spot-on like advantage or Frontline for her or give her a Nexgard or Bravecto chewy, which will work for a few weeks. All of these are available at your vet's or over the internet, possibly in a pet shop. You did well by washing the neck. This should have removed most of the collar-ingredient.

No, this is not safe to feed to your dog. It contains garlic powder. Garlic is toxic to dogs and causes anemia. Please do not give this to her again. If you want to control fleas, I'd recommend a chewable like NexGard or Bravecto. Best of luck.

Hello, so sorry to hear that Kya had this problem with the Nexgard. Personally, if my dog had a reaction to one of the oral flea medications (like Nexgard) I would not using any oral products in the future. I suggest you switch to a Seresto Collar. ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/seresto-flea-and-tick-collar-for-dogs ) One collar lasts 6-8 months depending on how much swimming/bathing the dogs does. I think you will be happier (as will Kya) with this collar. It is almost less expensive than using a monthly prevention. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

With this much vomiting I would be worried about the possibility of Penelope eating something she shouldn't have, such as a toy or other foreign material, which could have caused a blockage or obstruction of her intestines. The topical flea and tick medication should not cause her to vomit. I recommend offering Penelope a small amount of boiled chicken and rice, and see if she tolerates this. If she vomits this up and/or cannot even keep water down, she should be seen by your veterinarian for x-rays. If she can eat a small amount of this bland diet, I recommend feeding this boiled chicken and rice for the next 2-3 days and slowly transitioning her back to her usual diet. I hope this is helpful!
