My dog vomited Nexgard. Is he protected? Can I use a flea collar?

Poor pup! Nausea is less common with Nexgard than with some of the other oral flea meds available (such as Comfortis or Trifexis), but can still happen in some dogs. Normally, giving the pill with a meal helps to prevent this, but it doesn't sound like it's helped much for your dog. It normally doesn't matter what type of food you give it with, because the purpose of giving with a meal is to slow absorption of the medication so that it's more gradual - it's the presence of food in the stomach that helps, rather than any specific ingredients. So if this hasn't helped with your pup, you may want to try a different medication next month - the vomiting isn't dangerous and is not a sign of toxicity problems or any other serious issues, but I know it's no fun for either of you to have him vomit every month! He might do better with Bravecto, or a topical flea/tick med such as K9 Advantix.

I'm sorry to hear that Boo hasn't been feeling well! It is possible that the permethrin spray or collars may be related to his vomiting, but other possible causes include a foreign body intestinal obstruction, virus, parasites (particularly tapeworms since they can be transmitted by ingesting infected fleas), among others. At this point, I recommend leaving his flea collar off and bathing Boo in original blue Dawn dish soap to remove any residue remaining from the permethrin sponge bath. Withhold food for the next 12 hours, then gradually offer very small frequent meals of a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days. After a few days, gradually mix the bland diet with his normal food over another 5-7 days. If Boo continues to vomit, develops diarrhea, becomes lethargic or stops eating, he will need to go to his vet for further evaluation. Once he vomiting resolves, be sure that Boo is regularly receiving a high quality flea preventative, such as Nexgard, Bravecto, or K9 Advantix II. I hope that he feels better soon!

There isn’t a specific medication to counteract the effects, just supportive care. I would contact your vet so they can report the reaction to the company. Sadly, as with any medication, there is potential for negative side effects with Bexgard. It is generally very well tolerated and it is very effective. Vomiting and diarrhea are reported side effects in the drug insert provided by the company. I have never heard of frequent ruination. It sounds like Blitz should have a recheck to make sure he is stable and to provide supportive medications for his symptoms. I wish you both the best!

I always recommend the first time giving nexgard and heartgard to separate them out by 2 days in case there is a reaction we know which drug it could be. Both have the potential to cause an upset stomach. Also having intestinal parasites can cause vomiting and diarrhea. The heatgard kills round worms so that could be why Lucy passed the worm after you gave the medication. Sadly both are possible causes for her upset stomach. Usually all quickly resolve. Just watch her closely for the next several hours. If she continues to vomit or won't eat this morning I would call your Vet when they open this morning and have her seen before they close for the weekend. Good luck!

I am sorry to hear that Max is going through this. I don’t know how long ago he ingested the collar but I am concerned. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. X-rays may be recommended to look for an obstruction as well as blood work to evaluate For possible toxicity . Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would not recommend that you switch him yet as this may be completely coincidental. Nexgard is a great preventative and I would give it more time before switching to something else. Hopefully the scratching is not a reaction to it as that would be quite unusual. If the itchiness continues despite giving it a few days, that would likely be due to allergies rather than a cause of using Nexgard. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

You will need to get him a cone collar to stop him from chewing that spot until you can get the fleas and his discomfort under control. The lesion will not heal unless he stops chewing at it.
