Chihuahua's neck red from flea collar. Is it an allergic reaction?

It's hard to know exactly why she has the brownish discoloration. certainly you should try switching her to a different flea product and remove the collar. It may take up to two months for any discoloration to disappear. You could then try switching the collar to a nylon or fabric collar, again, it may take up to two months. In the mean time, there are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing Haddie's diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. Also protect the area from trauma by having Haddie wear an elizabethan collar if she is itching. Have her examined by the veterinarian if it appears to be getting worse. The safest thing to do is remove the collar and bathe her. If she is having a contact reaction removing any of the residual from the collar may help. I would advise having your veterinarian evaluate her especially if the integrity of the skin is compromised. This can lead to infection and more itching and scratching which will cause more damage. Your vet can evaluate the area and advise an adequate treatment to get her through this. I would contact the manufacturer of the collar and report this adverse reaction. Hopefully, along with your veterinarian helping you, they will offer to cover any medical costs associated with you using their product. Good luck

I recommend keeping the collar off for now and not letting her swim or get wet for at least the next few days. I would not put any more neosporin or other ointments on the area, as this can trap moisture and delay healing. If the area gets worse or you notice other areas becoming affected, Kenya should be seen by a veterinarian. I hope this is helpful!

Usually an allergic reaction to antibiotics or other medications happens right away, so it's not likely to be an allergic reaction to the medications, nut it could be an allergic reaction to food or to something in the environment. if it doesn't get better within 48 hours i would recommend having it checked and treated by your vet.

Ouch, poor Rose! Some dogs are allergic to fleas and can become intensely itchy, which can then lead to the development of a bacterial skin infection, which only amplifies the itch cycle. You did the right thing by starting Rose on flea prevention (K9 Advantix II is my favorite OTC topical), but a flea collar is unnecessary. Be sure to continue using topical flea prevention monthly to prevent flea eggs from hatching to larvae and reproducing. With the redness on Rose's skin, it is highly suspicious that she has developed a skin infection, which requires antibiotics for resolution. There aren't any over the counter medications available to to help with her itching or skin infection, so Rose will need to go to the vet. The vet will be able to prescribe the best medication (likely antibiotics and anti-itch medications) for Rose to remedy this issue. I hope that she feels better soon!

It is possible that Xina had a reaction to the flea collar. If you have not already done so, I would remove the flea collar and wash the fur and skin where the collar was. Many pets will have reactions to flea collars, so I recommend another form of flea preventative. She may also react to topical flea preventatives, so, in her case, it may be best to use a prescription oral preventative from your vet.
