My dog vomits after eating. What food is best for a sensitive stomach?

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 9 years and 7 months old | 5 lbs

My dog started vomiting after I bought a new bag of dog food. I tried two other bags from other places, same issue. I put her on chicken and rice for two weeks and started i tntroducing her food back in, but she has started vomiting again. What food should I have her on, as I don’t think I should cook chicken and rice forever!

I'm sorry to hear that Sophie is intolerant to the foods you are trying. This may be a sign of a chronic underlying problem with her stomach like IBD, food allergies, or pancreatitis. You can try feeding a formulation of a bland diet like Hill's I/d or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal. You can also try a hypoallergenic diet or a novel protein diet. If the vomiting persists, she should be examined by a veterinarian to determine what the underlying problem may be.

    If you have not already tried this food, I would try it. I have had many clients happy with the results. Feed him ONLY this food, nothing else; no treats, no human food, etc. It comes in dry and canned. Give it a good month to 6 weeks - if the diarrhea starts again then post again for more help.

    You may try feeding him one of the diets for pets with sensitive stomachs. Royal Canin and Purina pro plan both make nice, highly digestible diets to help dogs who are on the sensitive side. Starting a probiotic and testing for parasites, to make sure that’s not a problem, may also be beneficial. The probiotic FortiFlora is one of the best to buy. I hope this helps and best of luck.

    She may have food allergies if this had been going on for a while. Food allergies in dogs usually start around age 2-3 years. Another possibility is intestinal parasites or even organ malfunction (liver, kidney, etc).
    Some good sensitive stomach food choices are: Royal Canin hypoallergenic HP (hydrolysis protein), Hills Z/D, Iams limited ingredient and California Natural limited ingredient. If after 2 to 3 weeks of the food change you don't notice a drastic improvement you should definitely consider having her blood tested to make sure there are no other underlying disease processes causes her symptoms.

    I'm sorry to hear Sophie is having some tummy upset. I do not recommend giving raw chicken wings, as they can carry salmonella and the raw bones can be difficult to digest. I would recommend offering her a bland diet, such as white rice and boiled chicken breast. If she continues vomiting, doesn't want to eat or worsens, I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian. Good luck!

You can try several other brands of food that are good for dogs with food sensitivity, such as Fromm, Merrick limited ingredient, or Victor to name a few. What food is best for my Aussie with a sensitive, upset stomach?
Poor Emmi! Some dogs can exhibit vomiting and diarrhea as a result of a sensitivity to the different protein or carbohydrate sources in their foods. There is a chance that her current Iams diet may contain the same protein source as the previous diet, and if she is sensitive, it could be causing issues. Consider starting a diet trial with a novel protein diet (Dick van Patton's Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet is one OTC example). To perform this diet trial, you will find a new food with one protein source/one carbohydrate source that is different from the one that she is currently receiving. Gradually transition to the new diet by mixing old and new foods together for 5-7 days. Exclusively feed the new diet for at least 2-3 months to determine if the changes has been effective. It could take 6-8 weeks to notice any change. During this time, take care not to offer any table scraps or treats. If the diet trial is unsuccessful and Emmi continues having episodes of vomiting and diarrhea, consider taking her to her vet for an exam and further testing. Some diseases, such as Addison's disease or inflammatory bowel disease, can have intermittent signs of GI upset. Good luck!

One very possible cause for the vomiting at this consistency is a food allergy. Try discussing with your vet about getting Jax on a hypoallergenic food or highly digestible food such as Royal Canin Hypoallergenic hydrolyzed protein or Iams Intestinal Health Low Residue. These foods make it easier for the pet to digest leading to fewer vomiting episodes and overall good quality of health.

My dog eats fast, is hyper, and throws up. Should I change her food?
Dutchess could vomit due to many conditions including dietary intolerance, bacterial over growth, parasites (including worms and giardia) or even something more sinister. If she has not been checked for worms or giardia within the last 2 months, I recommend to have this done by the veterinarian. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. They do make a sensitive stomach formula which may help. If it does not, you may consider a food trial with a hydrolyzed protein diet. You may also consider having Dutchess spayed. This will help to calm her down somewhat but it will not alter her bouncy personality. These results can be variable but spaying dogs has significant health benefits long terms. Please feel free to post any additional questions!

You can try the duck or fish to see if Sadie likes that better, but do the food switch slowly over the course of two weeks to prevent further GI upset. Royal Canin has a sensitivity controlled food (Royal Canin Sensitivity Control) that may work for her as well. I hope this helps!

The brands that I personally recommend including Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. I recommend these brands because they have veterinary nutritionists on staff who make sure the food is healthy and formulated to meet an animal's nutritional needs. If you do decide to switch Bear's food, make sure you do the switch slowly to avoid GI upset. I hope this helps!

What's the best puppy food for a sensitive stomach: Science Diet or Honest Kitchen?
As you've experienced, diet changes can certainly cause some changes in stool volume, and for some dogs, can cause a bit of vomiting and diarrhea. When it comes to the countless brands of dog food on the market today, it's overwhelming to pick one for your pup. I recommend brands that have been formulated by a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, are manufactured in their own facility (less cross-contamination that facilities that manufacture numerous formulations), conduct AAFCO feeding trials, and meet WSAVA guidelines. When it comes down to it, the brands that meet those criteria include Hill's Science Diet, Purina, Royal Canin, Eukanuba, and Iams. As a result, I would recommend switching Lilly over to the Science Diet puppy food. Just remember that anytime you switch foods, be sure to do so by gradually mixing the old and new foods together over a 5-7 day period. I hope that everything goes well!
