My dog has a sensitive stomach and won't eat. What food should I try?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years old | 40 lbs

I'm giving my dog Hill's Science Diet Sensitive Skin and Stomach food, but he doesn't seem to like it any more and has had stomach issues. I brought him in for testing about a month ago and the vet had me start him on a low dose of omeprazole, this help with his occasional vomit, but he still is so-so about his food. He always use to be so excited. What type of food do you recommend?

You can try several other brands of food that are good for dogs with food sensitivity, such as Fromm, Merrick limited ingredient, or Victor to name a few. There are also prescription brands that are designed for pets with sensitive stomach, such as Royal Canin hydrolyzed protein or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal that you can discuss with your vet if interested.

I hope that are able to get something that agrees with Louis's stomach and also is appealing to him soon. Best wishes and take care!

    I would recommend easily digestible and hypoallergenic foods such as Royal Canin hypoallergenic hydrolyzed protein, California natural by Natura (Innova), Iams limited ingredient, or Hill's Z/D. Milo may have an inflammatory bowel disease, especially if he vomits often. I recommend these brands because they have veterinary nutritionists on staff who make sure the food is healthy and formulated to meet an animal's nutritional needs. In general, salmon is a good protein for sensitive stomachs. Limited ingredient diets are only good for dogs who have food allergies. In general, food allergy is rare and affects less than 10% of all dogs with allergies. I recommend instead, if the concern is a sensitive stomach, to try Royal Canin or Purina Pro Plan. Both of these companies carry sensitive stomach formulas. If you want to diagnose a food allergy, use a prescription hydrolyzed protein diet. I hope this helps.

I recommend to ask your veterinarian this question. A true food allergy generally requires a special diet (this is generally a prescription food and I always recommend one with a hydrolyzed protein). Dietary intolerance may just need a diet that is formulated for sensitive stomachs. I recommend the Royal Canin or Purina ProPlan. Your vet will be able to guide you as to which type of food to try. My allergic dog is picky. What LID food works for sensitive stomachs?
I love Natural Balance and am really surprised that it caused an upset tummy. As far as flavor goes, most of my patients like the venison and sweet potato the best. If she has skin allergies you want to stay away from the chicken and beef as most dogs are allergic to these. You could try Fromm's which is a little more expensive but a good food. Another option is to do a hypoallergenic diet that is prescribed by your vet. Always slowly mix the old food with the new food to help transition. I hope this helps!
