My dog has a sensitive stomach & is picky. What food is best?

You can try several other brands of food that are good for dogs with food sensitivity, such as Fromm, Merrick limited ingredient, or Victor to name a few. There are also prescription brands that are designed for pets with sensitive stomach, such as Royal Canin hydrolyzed protein or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal that you can discuss with your vet if interested. If Sadie has gastrointestinal signs, like vomiting, nausea, loose stools, gurgling abdomen, abdominal distension or abdominal pain, you should change her diet to a different one. There are good quality diets for dogs with sensitive stomach and skin problems on the market (for example Purina, Eukanuba, Royal Canin). It is better the change the diet slowly, as abrupt change is likely to produce more serious gastrointestinal problems. Please, mix Sadie's current food with a new diet for a few days slowly increasing the amount of new food and decreasing her old diet. After 4-5 days of doing this it should be safe to stop her Hill's food completely.

You can try feeding a formulation of a bland diet like Hill's I/d or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal. You can also try a hypoallergenic diet or a novel protein diet. If the vomiting persists, she should be examined by a veterinarian to determine what the underlying problem may be.

The main ingredient in that food is duck and tapioca. Duck is commonly found in several formulations of dog food, both prescription and over the counter. However, tapioca is not. It is limited to this brand. If the protein source is the problem, then staying on a duck formula is ideal and the carbohydrate portion will not matter. However, if the carbohydrate is the problem then you will have to perform an elimination diet to see what besides tapioca he can tolerate. Science diet makes a D/D version that does contain duck you can try, however the carbohydrate source is potato. Puirna Beyond has a duck and sweet potato formula you can try also.

I love Natural Balance and am really surprised that it caused an upset tummy. As far as flavor goes, most of my patients like the venison and sweet potato the best. If she has skin allergies you want to stay away from the chicken and beef as most dogs are allergic to these. You could try Fromm's which is a little more expensive but a good food. Another option is to do a hypoallergenic diet that is prescribed by your vet. Always slowly mix the old food with the new food to help transition. I hope this helps!

Poor Emmi! Some dogs can exhibit vomiting and diarrhea as a result of a sensitivity to the different protein or carbohydrate sources in their foods. There is a chance that her current Iams diet may contain the same protein source as the previous diet, and if she is sensitive, it could be causing issues. Consider starting a diet trial with a novel protein diet (Dick van Patton's Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet is one OTC example). To perform this diet trial, you will find a new food with one protein source/one carbohydrate source that is different from the one that she is currently receiving. Gradually transition to the new diet by mixing old and new foods together for 5-7 days. Exclusively feed the new diet for at least 2-3 months to determine if the changes has been effective. It could take 6-8 weeks to notice any change. During this time, take care not to offer any table scraps or treats. If the diet trial is unsuccessful and Emmi continues having episodes of vomiting and diarrhea, consider taking her to her vet for an exam and further testing. Some diseases, such as Addison's disease or inflammatory bowel disease, can have intermittent signs of GI upset. Good luck!
