What are cephalexin side effects for dogs, including drowsiness?

Lethargy and altered behavior are pretty typical side effects of prednisone. Along with this you may also see things like increased drinking, urinating, and eating. Long term side effects can include liver damage and commencement of certain diseases of the endocrine system. Cephalexin is an antibiotic that has the main side effect of gastrointestinal upset. If you decide that you do not think the prednisone is worth using due to the side effects, do not discontinue it abruptly. It has to be tapered down slowly as to prevent any harm to Kaiser. Using an antibiotic for a long period of time can however result in antibiotic resistance which is a major problem for animals and people. It is difficult to say how long is too long when you're talking about risk for antibiotic resistance. There are general guidelines regarding safe and prudent antibiotic usage - talk to your vet if you have concerns.

At the high end of the dose of 60mg/kg for systemic infections, it would be approximately 436mg every 8 hours for that dose for a 16lb dog. A 500mg capsule will not likely cause any life threatening problems. You may see vomiting and diarrhea but this should resolve on its own. Hello. Cephalexin is an antibiotic, so your veterinarian wanted to cover for any secondary bacterial infections. The side effects reported are vomiting, diarrhea, excitement, depression, anorexia, & salivation. This is a very common & safe antibiotic used in dogs. Terbinafine is the antifungal agent, and the side effects reported in dogs seem to only involve the eyes, including some swelling & conjunctivitis. In humans, the majority of adverse effects involve the GI tract & the skin. No reports of seizures are reported with the use of either drug. You didn't say why Titan is on medications, it may be that his sleepiness is due to his primary problem. Sedation is not typically a side effect of either cephalexin or prednisone. Be sure that he hasn't gotten into any other medications or toxins. If he is able to be awakened and has a normal response to calling his name, eating, drinking and normal urination and defecation he may just be tired out. If he is not responsive or sluggish to respond, then I recommend an emergency vet tonight to rule out an serious problems. I hope Titan is back to normal soon.

It is very likely she is having an adverse reaction to the Cephalexin. This is sometimes seen in pets that are sensitive to this medictaion. Notify your vet and then get her symptoms treated with medications prescribed by your vet. She will then need to go on a different class of antibiotic to treat her current condition and hopefully she will tolerate that one better. For now, its best to offer her small amounts of boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and rice to try and entice her to eat a little until you can get her seen by your vet for further care.
