Why does my dog vomit on a diet? Is it from hunger or eating too fast?

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | spayed | 4 years and 7 months old | 8.4 lbs

Is it possible for dogs to puke just because they are hungry and wants to eat again? I have a Pomeranian girl who began puking when we started getting her on a diet. Her knees were weakening due to jumping and a lot of exercise so we decided to give her less food(she used to eat a lot) until she loses 0.25-0.5lb. Is it possible for her to puke right after eating just to eat again when she's on a diet?

Hi there! I'm sorry to hear about Pola's troubles.
I have seem dogs vomit because of their stomach being empty for too long in between meals. Vomiting after eating however could more likely be a sign of something else. Maybe Pola's food no longer agrees with her or she's getting a sensitive stomach. Also, can you think of anything Pola may have gotten into? Dogs can get things stuck in the stomach that can cause partial blockages or even chronic irritation.
I would make sure you are giving Pola her total amount of food split into 2-3 meals every 8-12 hours.
Also important is if Pola has started eating faster because shes being given less food to eat. Eating too fast would make her throw up too. She may need to eat from a treat dispensing ball or something like a pickle pocket to make sure she's eating slowly.
If this doesn't go away in another 5 days or so I'd have her evaluated by her veterinarian. They can help you streamline her diet and also make sure she doesn't have anything else going on.

A dog may vomit if food is swallowed without being chewed adequately or if the meal is eaten quickly. You can try using a slow feed bowl to control Mini's eating. Dividing the meal into smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day may also decrease vomiting. If the vomiting persists, consider an exam with your veterinarian.

My dog keeps throwing up whole food after a diet change, what's wrong?

There may be two reasons: 1) you changed the food abruptly and 2) she is eating way to o much too fast ad 1) feed about 50:50 old food and new food and then gradually replace more of the old food with the new. Do this over several days. ad 2) Feed less food more often. This should clear up the problem.

My 9-year-old Havapoo vomits after dinner. Is her diet the problem?

Based on the information above if she is vomiting after dinner and she is eating rice and pork for dinner I would think the homemade diet is making her vomit. Dogs can have food sensitivity that causes vomiting. I would recommend trying to feed her the Purina dental kibble for both meals and see if it fixes the problem. If not I would recommend taking her to the vet for some basic blood work. In an 8 year old dog who is vomiting I would want to make sure the kidneys and liver are functioning normally. If the blood work is normal I would try to feed her a commercial dog food that is better rounded in vitamins and nutrients/. It is very difficult to make a dog food that has everything our pets need

My dog eats fast, is hyper, and throws up. Should I change her food?

Dutchess could vomit due to many conditions including dietary intolerance, bacterial over growth, parasites (including worms and giardia) or even something more sinister. If she has not been checked for worms or giardia within the last 2 months, I recommend to have this done by the veterinarian. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible. They do make a sensitive stomach formula which may help. If it does not, you may consider a food trial with a hydrolyzed protein diet. You may also consider having Dutchess spayed. This will help to calm her down somewhat but it will not alter her bouncy personality. These results can be variable but spaying dogs has significant health benefits long terms. Please feel free to post any additional questions!

My dog throws up food after eating fast. Is it serious?

This is definitely something that can occur as a result of how fast food and water are ingested. The maze dog food bowls work great or the bowls that only dispense a small amount of food at a time. You can try and elevate the food bowl and see if this helps. If the episodes become more frequent then I would recommend having a veterinarian take a look at Pepper and consider switching to a different food. I hope this helps!
