How long does it take for a dog to recover from vestibular disease?

It is possible to have both the trigeminal neuralgia and vestibular disease but it is more likely that it is just the vestibular disease. What was originally thought of as trigeminal neuralgia was probably just early signs of the vestibular disease. Typically dogs with this diagnosis recover in 3-5 days and only need supportive care to get through the worst of it. I have however had a patient that took almost 2 weeks to become normal. Although old dog vestibular disease can recur it is less common then with other diseases that cause vestibular symptoms. It would also be unusual for a dog to have symptoms of this syndrome, be normal that quick (depends on severity but most dogs get better over 7 to 14 days) and then have symptoms again. The yelping is also odd as this could signal pain. If you are saying that your dog moving his head initiates the pain then he could have neck pain. I would recommend having your veterinarian examine Egor again with these new symptoms. With some disease processes it can be helpful to see the progression in order to know what is going on. If neck pain is detected your vet may recommend some x-rays of the spine and pain management. If neurologic dysfunction is detected on a neurologic exam he or she may recommand referral to a veterinary neurologist. Thanks for using PetCoach! It sounds like Bruno could have "old dog idiopathic vestibular syndrome". There is more information below but we don't know why it happens and in general it usually gets better within a few days. Of course, we can never rule out a middle ear infection, brain tumor, or other problem so I always recommend seeing a vet. The most common condition that causes trouble walking, falling over, head tilt and trembling is Vestibular disease. This is a problem with the balance center in either the brain or the inner ear. Possible causes are an ear infection, stroke, low thyroid, a brain tumor or if he is just old it can be idiopathic (meaning we don't know why). I have seen dogs become Vestibular and then be normal that quickly, though usually the signs can persist for up to 2 weeks. I am not sure about the relation to the food you are feeding. If he shows the symptoms again I would immediately take him to your Vet for an exam. Consider video taping it so you can show them in case it goes away quickly again. Hello. Unfortunately, this is a tough question. Even if we know what caused the vestibular syndrome, recovery is mutlifactoral. You might ask your vet to culture the fluid in the ear to see if antibiotics might be necessary, & if you want to go this route, an MRI could determine what, if any damage has occurred in the vestibular apparatus of the inner ear. Otherwise, only time will tell. At a minimum, I will tell clients to give a pet 6-8 weeks to see if hearing returns, especially when the problem was due to aminoglycocide antibiotic medications ( like gentamicin ) have been used in the ears. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Abbey! If Abbey's vestibular signs have resolved and she can walk without falling over, her eyes have stopped moving abnormally (nystagmus) and she isn't nauseous anymore she can live a normal life and continue to do whatever activities she did before. If she still has symptoms then I wouldn't push her until they resolve as she would be feeling very dizzy and likely couldn't go very far. I wish Abbey the best!
