Is walking safe for my senior dog with vestibular disease? How far?

Hi there and thank you for using PetCoach to address your concern. Based on your description I would not suspect that a probiotic would cause this symptoms. In my years of using probiotics in dogs, this is one symptoms I've never seen arise from using a probiotic. Probiotics are quite safe to give to dogs and rarely cause side effects apart from GI upset (vomiting / diarrhea). I would recommend monitoring Roxy for 24 hours and if the symptoms persists, take her in to be examined by a veterinarian to help rule out other causes of this. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am so sorry for your concerns with Brian. These are pretty significant signs for a relatively young dog. I hope he has been seen by your veterinarian to determine the cause. If the underlying reason for his difficulties have been thoroughly investigated, & exercise in not contraindicated, then walking is always good. Keeping Brian on grass, walking with a harness rather than collar, or using a lift assist vest would all keep him from injuring himself. Supervised swimming might be beneficial, as well. The signs you described for Deacon do fit with vestibular disease but can also be seen with an inner ear infection, inflammation in the brain and a tumor in the brain. Typically vestibular disease will clear up within 5-7 days although I have seen some pets deal with it for 10-14 days until it is completely resolved. During that time, they are expected to show improvement daily. Of course you always have the option to have him seen at any point. But if he is not back to normal within 5 days or if he is getting worse, then it would be safer to have him examined. Thanks for using PetCoach! It sounds like Bruno could have "old dog idiopathic vestibular syndrome". There is more information below but we don't know why it happens and in general it usually gets better within a few days. Of course, we can never rule out a middle ear infection, brain tumor, or other problem so I always recommend seeing a vet. Neurologic issues can take time. It is great that she is up and bearing weight on her own, dogs are so amazing. Hopefully she had xrays to look for a spinal/pelvic fracture, collapsed disc space, etc. as these would be important to rule out as well. You will need to give her potentially even months to know what her new normal with be. Hopefully she will at some point be deficit free or only have a mild deficit but it is too soon to tell. Keep working with her. Hopefully your vet has recommended a physical therapy/rehab plan for her. If not, you could request referral to a rehab therapist. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without seeing Trixie it’s hard to be sure what’s going on. It sounds like vestibular disease. This is an inflammation of a nerve that runs near the ear. When this happens the pet has a head tilt, can’t stand or walk well and is dizzy. I would recommend keeping her calm and away from anything dangerous, like stairs, until you can get her to the vet. You don’t need to give her any medications and it’s ok if she doesn’t eat for a couple of days. Keep water close by. Good luck and kisses to Trixie!
