My dog has an infection. Can she get boosters after a bad reaction?

Hello, and may I say, Jewel Taco is one of the best dog names I've come across today! Since an ear infection is generally not a systemic infection (one that involves the entire body), it's probably just fine for Jewel Taco to have her shots tomorrow. Your vet will let you know if he or she doesn't think it's safe, so be sure to let them know how Jewel Taco's ears have been responding to the treatment. This depends on the drug that was given but it is possibly a side effect. Also remember that ear infections themselves can cause lethargy or “off” behavior as can the stress of visiting the vet. Don’t panic unless you see vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling, collapse, or other worrisome signs. If you’re seeing any of those, get to an emergency vet IMMEDIATLEY as these could be signs of a severe allergic reaction. Best of luck and I hope Baby is feeling better soon!

The two are likely not related. Ear infections can be avoided by regular cleaning and keeping the ears as dry as possible. Especially after swimming or bathing. Mike should be examined by your veterinarian. A swab of the ear can be examined to determine if there is a fungal or bacterial infection so that the proper medications can be dispensed.

Hello. This is a problem in some dogs. I would recommend discussing with your vet the possibility of bringing Nyla to the office on the morning of her next vaccination. Have them give a steroid injection called Dex SP and an injection of diphenhydramine & let them keep her all day. She may do OK with just this one booster vaccine. In a month, I would repeat this before giving rabies. In a year, do the same precautions & repeat rabies & distemper vaccines, again 1 month apart. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bella. I try to avoid chronic high doses of steroids in dogs whenever possible as there are side effects internally and externally. However, an injection to control a reaction is not something that concerns me if she is not taking other medications. Steroids can interfere with certain drugs. If her veterinarian deams it necessary after seeing her, then I would go ahead and have it administered. Great question!

Well that depends on the severity of the adverse reaction. If she is having a mild vaccine reaction (1 bout of vomiting, loose stool), then an anti-histamine (i.e. Benadryl) can be given in most cases and will calm the reaction down. However if she is having a more severe adverse reaction (i.e. continuous vomiting, anaphylaxis, severe lethargy, anorexia), then she will need an antihistamine shot (for immediate reversal), +/- steroid shot from your vet , +/- fluid therapy and close monitoring to ensure that the reaction subsides and that she remains stable.

Hello, and I'm sorry to hear that Layla has been unwell. Her dose of antibiotic does not seem inappropriate. It is possible that the antibiotic choice is incorrect. Since she is not improving, your vet may recommend a change of medication, or consider blood work and chest x-rays to rule out pneumonia, which may require other treatments such as IV fluid therapy and IV antibiotics. In the meantime, you can try a humidifier, or saline nasal sprays to help loosen secretions in her nasal cavity. Your vet may also suggest a cough suppressant to help improve her comfort.
