My puppy has an ear infection. Can she still get her scheduled shots?

Poor Scout! If he is really lethargic or walking in circles then I would have him seen today as it could be an inner ear infection. But if he is otherwise acting okay except for shaking his head or pawing at it then yes, it can wait until tomorrow. Your vet will be able to determine the type of infection and put him on the proper ear meds if needed. I hope this helps!

Hello, sorry to hear about Layla. A mild ear infection or skin infection should not interfere with vaccine administration. Any other more severe infections should be addressed prior to administrating the vaccines. If Layla has had a reaction previously, ideally the vaccines should be separated and not given all at once. This depends on the drug that was given but it is possibly a side effect. Also remember that ear infections themselves can cause lethargy or “off” behavior as can the stress of visiting the vet. Don’t panic unless you see vomiting, diarrhea, facial swelling, collapse, or other worrisome signs. You are right that there are different causes of ear infections, typically yeast and bacteria (there are many types). Ear medications prescribed are based on which of these is the problem. It is also important for their ear drum to be assessed prior to starting medications. As well, some dogs need oral medications in addition to topical if the infection is severe. Being so young is also a consideration with certain drugs. The best plan is to have your vet perform an ear cytology and assess for an intact ear drum prior to picking the best medication that is safe for Nola. The two are likely not related. Ear infections can be avoided by regular cleaning and keeping the ears as dry as possible. Especially after swimming or bathing. Mike should be examined by your veterinarian. A swab of the ear can be examined to determine if there is a fungal or bacterial infection so that the proper medications can be dispensed.

The veterinarian will examine her including inspecting the ear canals with a special instrument known as an otoscope. A sample will be taken from each ear canal to evaluate under the microscope. This will confirm an infection and determine the type. For example, she could have a yeast or bacterial infection or a combination of both. In other cases, ear mites are possible. Based on these results, appropriate treatment can be started. An ear cleaner is usually commonly used to cleanse and dry the canal. Then a medication is applied to treat the infection. Ear infections are painful and require prompt treatment. If left untreated, chronic changes can result that will predispose her to future problems. I hope this information helps!

Poor guy. : ( Unfortunately this antibiotic won't help with his ear infection. Most ear infections, unless they are inner ear, are treated with topical ear medication only b/c the outer ear does not have a good blood supply for systemic antibiotics to be effective. It is ok to wait until tomorrow to get Bear seen by your vet and to get this treated appropriately. I do hope that Bear gets some relief soon from his ear infection. Best wishes and take care!
