Is the 5-in-1 dog vaccine enough, or do I need 6-in-1 or 8-in-1?

Hi my dogs already have 2x 5in1 vaccine. Is it required to have 6in1 and 8in1 vaccine? or can I skip it.. I want only 5 in 1 vaccine.. because other vaccine is too expensive.. I just want to know if its fine.thanks

The number of vaccines that are needed depends on the dogs age. If your dog is a puppy he needs the vaccine every 3 weeks until he gets TWO past 12 weeks of age. If you started vaccinating him when he was 12 weeks or older he only needs TWO 3 weeks apart. All puppies need it boostered a year later (when they are over 1 year old) then every 3 years. The difference between vaccines is that the 6 in 1 and 8 in 1 both have coronavirus and the 8 in 1 also has 2 serovars for leptospirosis. I do not thin that coronavirus is absolutely necessary and the leptospirosis is needed if your dog is at risk. Dogs can get leptospirosis from free standing water/puddles by drinking the water that could be contaminated with this bacteria from wild animal and rat urine. It causes kidney and liver failure. If your dog hikes, camps and swims then you should give it if the bacteria is present in your country. Otherwise the 5 in 1 is sufficient.

We may give a 5 in 1 vaccine more than twice depending on the dog's age at initial vaccination, the labeling of the vaccine, and the vaccine manufacturer's specifications, as well as you dog's lifestyle. In some cases, the vaccines may be split into separate vaccinations (i.e. a Leptosporosis vaccine may be added to the Distemper-Parvo combination or may be given separately in a different injection). Discuss your concerns with your dog's vet as they may have reasons for the schedule they are using.

My puppy had a vaccine lapse. How many 6-in-1 shots are left?

My 8-week-old puppy needs shots. Should it be 7-way or 9-way?

There are a whole lot of different vaccines available out there in the world. The one to which you are referring is the Distemper Combination vaccine. In my book, as long as the vaccine is offering protection for the distemper virus, parvovirus, adenovirus, and para-influenza, all the rest are bonuses. But, just make sure that whatever vaccine is being given offers protection for those. If not, I would choose something different. I would also make sure that if you are administering vaccines yourself rather than going to a vet, that you use a very reputable place to purchase them. If the shots were not be refrigerated or were in an inappropriate environment, they may be ineffective. Hope this helps!

My 8-week puppy got 5-in-1 vaccine. What vaccine is next at 12 weeks?

Hi there. Unfortunately the vaccine label picture is very blurry and difficult to see. However, the typical 5 in 1 / DHPP vaccine is the vaccine for canine distemper , hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. As best as I can tell she had the appropriate vaccine at 8 weeks of age and should have it again now at 12 weeks. It is also recommended to booster again at 16 weeks. Good luck with your pup! For example, there have only been sporadic outbreaks across the country of Canine Influenza, & Lymes Disease is more of an issue east of the Mississippi. The AVMA considers the core or necessary vaccinations Rabies, Distemper, Adenovirus & Parvovirus, all of which can be given every 1, 2 or 3 years. My 1-year-old small dog is behind on shots. What vaccines are needed?

Vaccine recommendations to partially depend upon his lifestyle and where you live. Also, that second vaccine should have been given in a 2 to 4 week window from the initial vaccine. If it was given later than four weeks after the first vaccine, he will need booster vaccines within a 2 to 4 week window. Assuming he was given the vaccines at the appropriate time, Kai should get another DHLPP and a rabies vaccine. If he gets groomed, goes to the park or has contact with other dogs in general, you may consider getting a kennel cough vaccine. Other vaccines are for Lyme disease and Influenza (dog flu). Your local veterinarian can discuss if these diseases are present in your area and what potential risk factors exist. You may be able to find lower cost vaccinations at a low-cost vaccine clinic or a vaccine clinic in general. You can generally find information online.
