My adult dog needs a parvo vaccine. Which 5-in-1, 6-in-1, or 7-in-1?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The number of vaccines that are needed depends on the dogs age. If your dog is a puppy he needs the vaccine every 3 weeks until he gets TWO past 12 weeks of age. If you started vaccinating him when he was 12 weeks or older he only needs TWO 3 weeks apart. All puppies need it boostered a year later (when they are over 1 year old) then every 3 years. The difference between vaccines is that the 6 in 1 and 8 in 1 both have coronavirus and the 8 in 1 also has 2 serovars for leptospirosis. I do not thin that coronavirus is absolutely necessary and the leptospirosis is needed if your dog is at risk. Dogs can get leptospirosis from free standing water/puddles by drinking the water that could be contaminated with this bacteria from wild animal and rat urine. It causes kidney and liver failure. If your dog hikes, camps and swims then you should give it if the bacteria is present in your country. Otherwise the 5 in 1 is sufficient. I wish you the best!

I would consult your veterinarian for the best choice for your dog given his age and lifestyle. We may give a 5 in 1 vaccine more than twice depending on the dog's age at initial vaccination, the labeling of the vaccine, and the vaccine manufacturer's specifications, as well as you dog's lifestyle. In some cases, the vaccines may be split into separate vaccinations (i.e. a Leptosporosis vaccine may be added to the Distemper-Parvo combination or may be given separately in a different injection). Discuss your concerns with your dog's vet as they may have reasons for the schedule they are using.

There are a whole lot of different vaccines available out there in the world. The one to which you are referring is the Distemper Combination vaccine. In my book, as long as the vaccine is offering protection for the distemper virus, parvovirus, adenovirus, and para-influenza, all the rest are bonuses. But, just make sure that whatever vaccine is being given offers protection for those. If not, I would choose something different. I would also make sure that if you are administering vaccines yourself rather than going to a vet, that you use a very reputable place to purchase them. If the shots were not be refrigerated or were in an inappropriate environment, they may be ineffective. Hope this helps!

Hi there. If leptospirosis is a concern in your area, then you would vaccinate with the 10-way. If not, or if you choose not to vaccinate for lepto (some owners prefer not to), then you would use the 5-way. There is no need to "start with" the 5-way at this age.

Most adult dogs that were appropriately vaccinated against parvo as puppies - meaning 3 different vaccinations, given no earlier than 8 weeks of age and proceeding at 3 - 4 week intervals - are protected against contracting parvovirus, as long as they receive booster vaccinations as recommended. Typically, the recommendation is one vaccination on the one year anniversary of the last puppy vaccination, and then re-vaccination every 3 years after. Just one parvo vaccination is unlikely to be completely effective, but it may provide some protection, and if he contracts the disease it will likely be a milder form.

No, vaccnes should not begin until 7-8 weeks of age. Additionally I would not recommend a 7 in 1 until the puppy is at least 12 weeks old. Typically only Distemper/parvo and bordetella is recommended this young. Please post again with any further questions.

Vaccinations include to protect against distemper, parvovirus, parainfluenza, adenovirus, bordetella, and rabies. You should also discuss checking his stool for parasites and deworming him.
