My 8-week puppy got 5-in-1 vaccine. What vaccine is next at 12 weeks?

It looks like Cali has been dewormed a few times and received her DHPP (distemper/parvovirus combination) on 3/16 and again on 3/28. This vaccine should be boostered every 3-4 weeks until after 16 weeks of age. Cali will also need her rabies vaccine between 12-16 weeks of age. Your vet can discuss what other vaccines are recommended for your area and Cali’s exposure risk. Hope this helps!

There are a whole lot of different vaccines available out there in the world. The one to which you are referring is the Distemper Combination vaccine. In my book, as long as the vaccine is offering protection for the distemper virus, parvovirus, adenovirus, and para-influenza, all the rest are bonuses. But, just make sure that whatever vaccine is being given offers protection for those. If not, I would choose something different. I would also make sure that if you are administering vaccines yourself rather than going to a vet, that you use a very reputable place to purchase them. If the shots were not be refrigerated or were in an inappropriate environment, they may be ineffective. Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The number of vaccines that are needed depends on the dogs age. If your dog is a puppy he needs the vaccine every 3 weeks until he gets TWO past 12 weeks of age. If you started vaccinating him when he was 12 weeks or older he only needs TWO 3 weeks apart. All puppies need it boostered a year later (when they are over 1 year old) then every 3 years. The difference between vaccines is that the 6 in 1 and 8 in 1 both have coronavirus and the 8 in 1 also has 2 serovars for leptospirosis. I do not thin that coronavirus is absolutely necessary and the leptospirosis is needed if your dog is at risk. Dogs can get leptospirosis from free standing water/puddles by drinking the water that could be contaminated with this bacteria from wild animal and rat urine. It causes kidney and liver failure. If your dog hikes, camps and swims then you should give it if the bacteria is present in your country. Otherwise the 5 in 1 is sufficient. I wish you the best!

Puppies need a series of DA2PP (also called DHPP, combo boosters or Distemper/Parvo) vaccinations every 2-4 weeks until they reach at least 16 weeks of age (but up to 18-20 weeks in some cases). Lepto is an optional vaccination that does need to be boostered once. Bordatella is an optional vaccination as well. What your veterinarian is recommending appears to be the appropriate boosters of the vaccines that Toffee previously received. The distemper-parvo combination vaccine (DHPP) is typically given every 2-4 weeks until the puppy is at least 16 weeks of age. The "L" of that combination is leptospirosis. That takes two vaccines to complete the series so this is likely fine. He should have a bordetella vaccine and depending on his lifestyle, influenza. I hope this information helps!

Yes, the distemper/parvo (DHPP) combination vaccinations that we use in puppies are the same as those we use in adults, but some of the ingredients in some of the combination vaccinations are not given until the puppies are older. I would recommend speaking to your veterinarian about which viruses should be included in puppies vaccinations, but they are generally canine distemper, infectious hepatitis, parainfluenza and parvovirus.
