My dog has a UTI, on meds, barely peeing. Is it serious? What to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 40 lbs

Our dog has a UTI and has only peed once today. Taking pain meds and antibiotics from vet. Should we be concerned and what can we do?

Is she trying to urinate but can’t? If so this could be an emergency and she should be seen immediately. It is also possible that she is dehydrated and doesn’t have much urine to produce. Either way I do think that this is concerning and she should be evaluated as soon as possible. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Poor Shelby! Frequent urination and straining is certainly not normal, and I agree with your concern - a UTI seems possible, as well as crystals in the urine or bladder stones. Even though she seems fine today, I would still take her to the vet for an exam and urinalysis to assure that everything looks okay. Better to catch and start treating a UTI sooner rather than later! I hope that all goes well!

I am sorry to hear this. It can take 48-72 hrs for antibiotics to reduce the bacteria load enough to improve clinical symptoms.
However the straining is concerning to some degree because pets can strain from either cystitis (inflamed bladder) or from a urinary bladder stone blockage. With Chichi carefully for signs of a true urinary blockage, which would involve a lack of any urine output, a swollen abdomen, and discomfort. If you have any question whether she could be blocked or not, then it is best to have her evaluated by your veterinarian, or anyone that is open today, immediately!
However if she is still able to urinate small amounts and going frequently (more than once an hour) then there are more likely signs of cystitis (inflamed bladder), which should improve within the time frame mentioned earlier, and should resolve completely after 7-10 days if this is an uncomplicated UTI.

I'm sorry Pebbles has been having such problems with UTIs! This is a great question. This depends. If she appears otherwise healthy and happy, eats and drinks plenty, you can wait until Monday morning. If she appears lethargic, ill or distressed, or if the urine appears very bloody, then she should be seen by a vet ASAP. Feed her wet/canned food, add water to it, and make sure she drinks a lot of water to help flush the bladder.

She may indeed have a UTI, but also a slipped disc in her spine could make urination painful, or bladder stones. Since not being able to urinate can be a life threatening condition and cause kidney damage, it is very important that you take Leeloo to your veterinarian ASAP, ie this is an emergency. Puppy dribbles pee, has accidents, UTI meds not working. What to do?

If the antibiotics didn't make much difference, I'd be suspicious of puppy vaginitis, which is a relatively common inflammatory condition that can lead to accidents and sometimes make them more susceptible to urinary infections. It generally resolves with age. I would also check for a stricture (this may require sedation as they don't love vaginal palpation...). For now, since your vet hasn't been able to check a urinalysis, that would be the first priority. See if you can get a sample- sneak a small container under her when she squats. If you have to hold onto the sample a few hours before dropping it at your vet, stick it in the fridge, but the fresher the better. If you're having no luck, your vet can collect a sterile sample via cystocentesis. Hope this helps.

Dog straining, bloody urine. Is it a UTI or emergency vet needed?

Yes, I would definitely take Kahlua into an ER vet. I would be very concern that if she is trying to urinate and nothing is happening that she may have bladder stones. Those can cause a blockage in the urethra, which is fatal without treatment. It could also be a UTI, but as I said, it's quite concerning that she is trying to urinate with nothing coming out. Please take her into a vet right away.

My dog won't eat, pees frequently, and seems depressed. Is it a UTI?

Poor girl. This is concerning that she not only has a UTI but that the bacteria has now entered her bloodstream (sepsis) and is making her ill. Yes your vet will have to see her to get her urine tested first and then prescribe antibiotics to hopefully get her feeling better soon. You cannot get antibiotics prescirbed for your pet without first completing a physical exam. Other possible causes for this include: diabetes, cushing's disease aor even cancer unfortunately. It is best to get Marley checked out right away. I do hope that Marley starts to feel better soon! Best of luck and take care.

My cat is trying to pee but only dribbles. Is it a UTI or emergency?

You need to have her looked at. Most likely she has a urinary tract infection. But she could also be having problems with her kidneys. If she is only dribbling and seems very uncomfortable there could be something making it so she can’t urinate. That is an emergency situation. My advice is to have her seen.
