My dog finished UTI antibiotics. How long until symptoms are gone?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Antibiotics for a UTI can take a few days to clear up the infection. I would recommend monitoring him for another few days. If it doesn't clear up by that point then I would suggest having him re-checked and a sample of his urine being sent away for a culture and sensitivity in case the antibiotic is not the right one for the infection that Brownie has. Poor girl. Yes it can be normal for pets to still have blood in their urine unfortunately for up to 48 to 72 hours after taking antibiotics. However you should see improvement with the blood every day and your pet should still be active alert and relatively stable otherwise.

Hi, and thanks for your question. These signs are definitively compatible with a urinary tract infection/inflammation. Stress related (idiopathic type of inflammation) infection and presence of crystals are the most common causes of it. Another clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Ultrasound or x rays of the abdomen may be needed as there may be stones inside the bladder (which does not show up on urine analysis). In general, a dog should be off antibiotics for 10-14 days prior to a urine culture, but sometimes we will culture a dog that has not been off antibiotics that long if we suspect that there is still an infection. I would certainly discuss that with the specialist and get their recommendation. It would be a good idea to do another urinalysis to verify that the treatment worked and there are no more bacteria present in the urine. So I would highly recommend another urinatlysis in order to make sure Maya does not need more antibiotics to entirely eliminate the infection.

Good on you for taking Zero into the vet when you noticed the symptoms he was having! It will take a couple of days for him to return to normal after having a UTI, and that would be why you notice him still in some discomfort. It's good that his urine appears to be back to normal, which does suggest the medication is working. He should continue to improve as you give the medication, and be very sure to give it as prescribed. If you notice that the blood returns to his urine and/or he continues to appear painful over the next three to four days, then I would take him back into the vet. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Yes urinary stones can be present even though there are no signs at the moment, as antibiotics could possibly mask the signs. I would suggest either to stop antibiotics and see if the signs reoccur or to take an x-ray and rule out radiopaque stones. Alternatively ultrasound can be performed to rule out ALL type of stones (some of them cannot be seen with x rays).
