Hi there! I'm sorry to read about Martha's troubles. There are several reasons for incontinence in dogs. It can range from something as simple as a urinary tract infection to kidney disease as you've mentioned, to actual incontinence. Sometimes stones or crystals in the urinary bladder can cause incontinence too. Normally what I do for a pet that is having urinary incontinence is evaluate some lab work like blood and urine and make sure the kidneys are ok, and that we aren't dealing with a urinary tract infection - which includes sometimes a kidney infection. If any of these things are the potential causes, I'll treat them accordingly. I will also check xrays to look for urinary bladder stones. If all of the above things are ruled out, meaning they aren't the cause, I will treat with incontinence medications. I'd definitely recommend a vet visit for Ms. Martha. You may get a lot of answers about this issue and her overall health, which is important for senior pet!

If there is still evidence of infection after 2 weeks of Augmentin, then I would recommend performing a urine culture which involves sending a sample to the lab to determine what bacteria is present and what antibiotics will work against them. If the urine sample just has blood, then I would recommend taking an x-ray since sometimes we can't feel small bladder stones on exam. If all that is normal, then I think the next step would be to perform an ultrasound of the bladder and kidneys to find the source of the bleeding. If she is getting recurrent urinary tract infections than she should be checked for bladder stones as dogs with bladder stones typically have recurrent infections. Your vet can take an x-ray or do an ultrasound of her bladder to check for stones. She should also have her kidney values checked and may need to stay on an antibiotic for an exteded period of time.
