Why is my dog still peeing bloody mucus after vet visits and meds?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Female | spayed | 11 years and 6 months old | 8.4 lbs

Female Schnauzer, spayed. 11 years old. Has mucus stringing from her after she urinates. It was bloody. Today was clear but still there sometimes. Has been to vet. He ran bloodwork and palpated bladder. Says no bladder stones and bloodwork was okay for dog her age. Just finished two rounds of antibiotics (augmentin) for the past two weeks. She's been losing weight this past year. Down from 14# to 8.4#. On Hills Rx W/d since suffering pancreatitis several years ago.

I'm sorry that Daisy is having this problem. It sounds like you are doing everything right. I have a few suggestions for you. If your vet has not performed a urinalysis, that should be done. If there is still evidence of infection after 2 weeks of Augmentin, then I would recommend performing a urine culture which involves sending a sample to the lab to determine what bacteria is present and what antibiotics will work against them. If the urine sample just has blood, then I would recommend taking an x-ray since sometimes we can't feel small bladder stones on exam. If all that is normal, then I think the next step would be to perform an ultrasound of the bladder and kidneys to find the source of the bleeding. You vet may be able to do that or may have to refer you to a specialist.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It becomes concerning when an older dog develops blood urine that is non-responsive to antibiotics. Having blood in the urine with out bacteria can mean a bladder stone or a bladder tumor. Tests I would consider next would be a urine culture, one belly X-ray to look for a bladder stone and full blood work. If the culture is negative and the X-ray doesn't show a stone then I would worry about a bladder tumor. An ultrasound of her bladder would help diagnose if she has a bladder tumor. Another option before doing more testing is to try a more powerful antibiotic for 3 weeks. But if the blood is still present with out the presence of bacteria then I would go forward. I'm not sure what your question is, but if a veterinarian has looked at Bubba's urine under a microscope and determined there is an infection, it is good he is on the antibiotics. If he has been on the medications and still having problems with the urine, I would recommend seeing a vet to determine if there is something more going on, like bladder stones. Why does my dog's UTI keep coming back after antibiotic treatment?

Many times there is an underlying cause of recurrent UTI-like symptoms. Daisy likely needs additional diagnostics, like: Urine sediment exam: to look for crystals in the urine Abdominal x-rays: to look for bladder stones that cause inflammation and can create an environment for UTI Abdominal ultrasound: to look for possible tumors Urine culture: to look for resistant bacteria, this will also help your vet determine the best antibiotic to use. Other medications to consider are anti-inflammatories, prescription urinary diets, and bladder support supplements; you can discuss this with your veterinarian.

Hello, sorry to hear about Buddy. There are multiple causes of this and may include bladder stones that are not evident on x-rays, a resistant urinary tract infection, an enlarged prostrate, a prostate abscess, and less likely a bladder tumor. To further diagnose why he continues to have intermittent blood in his urine, he may need to have more diagnostics such as an abdominal ultrasound and a urine culture. I'm sorry to hear that Snare has been having so many urinary issues. There are several possible causes for his ongoing bloody urine and straining. One possible cause is that the bacteria causing his urinary tract infection are resistant to the antibiotic being used. Others include the possibility of prostate issues, bladder stones, crystals or a bladder mass, which could be partially blocking the urethra or causing discomfort. I strongly recommend taking Snare to his vet first thing in the morning for further evaluation. Your vet will likely recommend additional diagnostic tests, which may include a urine culture, x-rays or an abdominal ultrasound. If Snare becomes unable to urinate or is straining, but unable to pass any urine, this is an emergency and should be addressed by an emergency vet immediately. Dachshund in pain, blood in urine, no diagnosis. How to help?

It sounds as though Faith has not received adequate pain control and this is something that should be addressed. If she is just on an anti-inflammatory, I would consider adding a medication such as Methadone or Tramadol to help ease the pain further if the current medication is not cutting it. If x-rays or an abdominal ultrasound have not been performed yet, I would recommend having these done. A CT scan may also help in determining the source of pain. I hope this helps! My dog has a UTI. Why is she bleeding after starting antibiotics?

Frequent licking and blood in the urine are signs of an infection. However if it flared after the start of the antibiotics then I would pursue further testing. Did they do anytime sample tonxhexk for cells and crystals and see what bacteria what present? From there you need an X-ray or an ultrasound to make sure there are no bladder stones as this can require surgery or the problem will keep occurring without.
