My senior dog vomited. What mild food can I give for an upset stomach?

Throwing up can have many causes such as a problem with the stomach and intestines caused by a food over sensitivity, eating something that does not agree with the dog, intestinal parasites, an intestinal blockage, bacterial infection, viral infection, the weather, food change, stress, etc.  I would fast Misty for 24 hours and then put the dog on bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the vomiting or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, it needs to see a veterinarian for an exam as there may be something more serious such as an infection going on.

It could be that Dakota has a GI illness or may have eaten something that upset her stomach. It's good that she has stopped vomiting and is drinking water, but I imagine her stomach is still a little sensitive from the vomiting. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps her. I would feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. You could try withholding food for about 6-8 hours as long as Julie is otherwise healthy and doesn't have any other symptoms. You could then try offering a a small amount of a bland diet like a mixture of 25% plain, boiled boneless chicken breast and 75% plain cooked white rice (as long as Julie doesn't have any food sensitivities). If she continues to vomit you should contact your vet.

If she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Stop giving her food like carne burritos and bologna. They are not healthy for her and cause GI upset. She doesn't need bread either.

For any GI upset, a bland diet (such as white rice and plain boiled white meat chicken) that is easily digestible is a good option. If chicken isn't an option for her, very lean ground beef browned in a skillet with no oil is another good option. If she continues vomiting, doesn't want to eat or otherwise starts acting ill, then I would recommend having her evaluated by her regular veterinarian. Good luck!

I am very sorry to hear that Mr Dolly isn't himself. I would try to tempt him to eat with boiled boneless chicken breast and white rice. This diet is bland and easily digested in case he has a gastrointestinal concern brewing, but also highly palatable. It is okay for a dog to fast for many hours, and is often their instinct when their gastrointestinal tract is upset. If Mr. Dolly continues to refuse to eat, starts to vomit or have diarrhoea, you notice any blood, he is lethargic or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian.

It is really not recommended that you feed him all these human foods. They are not good for him and, as you can see, they can upset his stomach. As they get older, just like in people, they get more intolerant of certain foods. Dog food only from now on. I would not be overly concerned if he only vomited once and seems otherwise fine. I have no idea what he threw up in that photo. If he continues to vomit or shows any other signs of illness then you need to take him to the vet for an exam.
