My dog has constant upset stomach, smelly gas, and mucusy poop. Is this normal?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Poodle | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 10 lbs

My dog has symptoms of an upset stomach almost all the time. He has very smelly gas, and a lot of times mucusy poo. Is that normal? He is a mini poodle.

This is not normal and could indicate a food intolerance, or infection. You can try to see if a bland diet and probiotics help to reduce the gas and mucousy poo. You can buy bland diets at the pet store (best option), or make a bland diet for him at home (boiled chicken, duck, or turkey plus potato, rice, pumpkin, etc.). If the his stools and gas improve with this diet, then it would be best to switch him to another food with different ingredients.

If this doesn't help after 1-2 weeks of starting the diet, then I would be more suspicious of an infection and recommend he goes to a vet for an evaluation.

Hi. Yes if he is still vomiting even after the antibiotics and with a bland diet, it would be best to have him checked out. It may just be the new food that he is getting used to, but it is hard to tell. There are many things that can cause vomiting. I would recommend calling your veterinarian in the morning to schedule an appointment and they can then determine if there is any testing that may need to be done or if he just needs to be on a bland diet of it longer. These signs (fece with mucus) could be compatible with a colitis, which is an inflammation of the last part of the colon, usually related to dietary indiscretion. As a first approach, I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days.
I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence.

It could be that Oz had severe gastric upset. When dogs have an upset stomach it can cause severe gas and even diarrhea. I would continue feeding the bland diet and start an over the counter probiotic. If he is a young dog it is possible that he has a mild food allergy or an easily upset stomach (sometimes this is irritable bowl syndrome). Typically strong smelling gas in from the diet. I think slowly switching Ziggys food to maybe a different protein source of purina would help calm down or stop the gas. However, if you want to try an over the counter probiotic every day in the food and see if helping the good bacteria grow improved the gas. Do not forget to have a fecal checked for parasites just incase! hope that helps

My dog has green mushy poop, mucus, and vomiting. What can I do?

I'm sorry to hear that Stinky isn't feeling well. I can't tell if the soft stool are vomiting are common for her or a new thing. If long term (more than a month), it could be caused by intestinal parasites, food intolerance or allergy, or less likely an endocrine issue. If it's a sudden change, she could have caused an acute entrogastritis by eating something different/bad, could have an infection, or many other causes. If she's eating well and energetic, it's not generally an emergency and you can wait to see if she gets better with time. A daily probiotic can help (anything you find at a store is fine, or you can buy Fortiflora on Amazon). If the vomiting has been going on for more than a few days, or is frequent (more than a couple times a day) I would recommend a vet visit when possible

This could be due to a number of things, most like;y him eating something that disagreed with him, something too rich that he isn't used to eating. If you changed his dog food recently or introduced wet food to his diet this could be what started it. Other possibilities include parasites, food allergies, or bacterial infection. Try feeding him a bland diet for a few days, plain cooked white rice mixed with an equal part of plain boiled chicken breast, unseasoned, or plain hamburger, cooked and the fat rinsed off. If the symptoms persist or get worse, including developing new symptoms like diarrhea, lethargy and loss of appetite, get him seen by your vet as soon as possible for an exam and fecal analysis.

No, it's not normally to have smelly gas, and it could be due to intestinal worms or a sudden change in diet. Should he not be up to date on his deworming treatments, you will need to get one from the vet. To help with his smelly gas, you can try feeding him a bland diet if he is up to date on his deworming treatment. I would feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet.

Poor Calli! Since she is feeling pretty well overall I would pull up her regular food and feed her only a very bland diet of boiled skinless chicken and white rice. If the mucus in the stool is continuing despite this after 24 hours then you can make an appointment with your vet and bring in a sample of the stool for parasite testing. They can prescribe medication if necessary.

My senior dog is lethargic with gas and won't eat. What's wrong?

Hello, and thank you for your question. Mojo's symptoms may be indicative of gastroenteritis (a gut infection), gastrointestinal parasites, food intolerance or food allergies, pancreatitis, or inflammatory bowel disease. As you can see, the list of possibilities is long and varied. I would recommend taking him to the vet. They can perform a full physical exam and assess for any areas of pain, which would be supportive of pancreatitis (for example). They may recommend testing a stool sample for parasites, senior blood work, and/or taking x-rays of the abdomen. At minimum, they can prescribe medicine to help with the tummy upset and improve his comfort. In the meantime, I would continue with the probiotic, and try small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice. This may be easier for his tummy to digest. I would also think back to any new food or treats that were introduced prior to this problem starting, and if so, make sure to eliminate them in case they are contributing to his symptoms.
