My dog is hungry. Should I fast or feed bland diet for upset stomach?

Hello. It never hurts to do a small fast to help settle the stomach. 12 hours should be fine & then re-introduce food slowly, maybe 1/3 of the ration followed several hours later by another 1/3 & remainder in the evening. There is not a hard and fast rule for how long a pet should be without food. Some vets say as long as 24 hours. I generally recommend 6 to 12 hours. It may help also if you feed him a bland diet for the next 24 hours. Boiled white meat chicken and plain boiled white rice. If he continues to be sick, have him examined by the veterinarian.

Then slowly add back in Luna's normal diet. If she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Stop giving her food like carne burritos and bologna. They are not healthy for her and cause GI upset. She doesn't need bread either.

You can put Cocoon bland food for two days, such as boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat, fed in small quantities over several feeds and then transition back to regular food slowly over a few days. If this does not clear up the diarrhea or if the vomiting increases, or if your dog gets lethargic, it needs to see a veterinarian for a recheck.

I'm glad that Machin is doing better after being so sick! It is recommended to withhold food when a dog is vomiting. I'm not sure when Machin last vomited, but I would wait at least 12 hours from the time he last vomited before feeding him again. I would then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he starts vomiting again on the bland diet, then I would take him back into the vet.

Poor Louie! I'm sorry to hear that he's sick. My general rule of thumb with vomiting and not eating much is that if it goes on for more than 24 hours, a vet visit is warranted. So if this has been going on for three days now, I would really recommend having him seen by a veterinarian today rather than continuing to try and manage at home, since I would be concerned that he has something more serious going on than a simple upset stomach. If you're not able to get him in to an emergency clinic today, then it's probably best to continue offering small amounts of something bland such as plain boiled chicken every few hours until you are able to see the vet. But I would focus on finding a way to have him seen as soon as possible.
