My dog's upper lip is red. What's causing it and how to help?

She may require testing to rule out ringworm and mites. If it is determined that it is not an infection, then I would consider a food allergy or an autoimmune disease. She is cute. She could have some allergies, especially if she is licking or chewing on her body, causing the redness and you could talk to your vet about trying an antihistamine to see if that helps. If it doesn't seem to be bothering her, you could also just monitor for a bit and see how it changes.

Poor guy. Yes this does seem to be a localized reaction and it could be to just about anything that has been newly introduced or even something Mork got into that he is having an allergic reaction to. I wouldn’t suspect this is caused by brushing his teeth too hard because this is his lip area that looks irritated. It’s best to visit your vet for some medication to help combat this reaction, especially if this area is bothering him and not improving on its own within a few days. Poor guy! Your can try this: It won’t hurt him if he licks it off. However, if it’s not improving in 5 days or so, I would recommend that you schedule a recheck with your vet. I’m worried he may need antibiotics, as he may have a deep skin infection. If it continues to be a problem , a skin biopsy may be recommended. Thanks for asking PetCoach!

Lesions like this can be related to acne, folliculitis or allergies. Typically this does respond to antibiotics but if allergies are the issue, the condition can reoccur. Dogs breeds with heavy jowls/lips are more prone to this condition. Washing all the food/water dishes and all chew toys once a week can help. Your veterinarian may also carry medicated wipes the clean the area daily. Lastly, if allergies are suspected, Jax may need a special diet or even blood testing to determine the offending allergen. Poor guy. He may have been bitten by an insect and is having an allergic reaction. If he doesn't seem to be bothered by it, I would just monitor it for now to see if this resolves on its own. If it does seem to bother him or doesn't resolve then its best to take him to your vet for treatment. Antihistamines and allergy medication will likely be prescribed. This is probably caused by an allergic reaction. first of all make sure you de-flea Dessy regularly every month with a high quality spot on (ex. Advantage) as fleas are by far the most common reason for these reactions. If the fleas are not the problem, it could be an allergic reaction to food or an environmental factor. this is more complicated to treat and will sometimes require medications such as Steroids, anti histamines or cyclosporin in order to stop the allergy.
