My Lab has ear infections & sea trout allergy. Can she eat salmon?

Cooked salmon is fine. We typically recommend avoiding the frequent proteins found in regular diets. This may include chicken and beef mainly. For novel proteins, we typically recommend venison, duck, or rabbit. You can find commercial diets with these ingredients. Occasionally, pets may also be allergic to grains, so selecting something with a single ingredient such as potato and duck is usually the best option. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Royal canin makes other hypoallergenic diets such as rabbit and potato or Iams makes kangaroo and Oats. Purina and science diet have their share are hypoallergenic diets also it might be worth trying one of these and possibly rotating some so she does not get bored. Food allergy testing through blood is it very accurate, typically trial and error with food is more reliable

However, if these infections are recurrent, I would have to assume that this could be due to allergies. An examination and gathering more information would help tremendously. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

HI, sorry to hear you're having a problem with Coal. In my experience, usually dogs are allergic to a type of grain or meat, not milk. But if that's the case, there may be something else he is allergic to that you have not tested for yet. I would put him on a special prescription diet for dogs with allergies. Also, ask your vet about medication to use when he is having flare up. Steroids can be helpful for this, but they need to be prescribed by a vet. there is another medication called Apoquel which may be available to you that is a great help. There are many reasons for itchy ears outside of a bacterial or yeast infection which has been ruled out, food sensitivities, allergy/atopy and thyroid disease can cause similar signs. I recommend tryign a hydrolysed food trial for 8 weeks with royal canin hypoallergenic or hills z/d (no treats, flavored tablets etc with only water to drink) to see if this reduces the itching. Blood tests to identify triggers and assess for hormonal conditions as well as allergy medications may also be required if not resolving

You can consider a sensitive stomach type diet which does not contain that protein to see if there is improvement. You could also try chicken as a main protein now in his next diet. Hi there. Recurring ear infections, or persistently itchy, irritated ears, are indeed a common sign of allergies in dogs. This can be due to environmental allergies, a food allergy, or both. Apoquel is usually effective at treating environmental allergy problems - so if it didn't help much, I agree that a food trial with a prescription hypoallergenic diet would be the next logical step. If she responds well to the prescription diet, you may be able to cautiously switch her back to an over-the-counter limited ingredient food for long-term maintenance.
